That's right, I forgot that Italy and England didn't have a non-EU rule like in Spain. :$

Having to many foreign players undermines the nationality of the league and the national team itself. More English players in the EPL will be much better for the national team in future years.

In the EPL, Arsenal will be the hit the hardest. Wenger opted to bring in youth from the continent and ignored home grown talent as it generally takes longer and more expense due to FA rules about academy members living within 45 minutes of the academy, etc.

It won't hit us at all.

Read the post above. homegrown players don't have to come form england, They just have to be rought to your team between the ages 15-21 and play for your club for 3 years.

Right now all the youth players from the big clubs never get a chance because they think they can always find someone better somewhere else and they don't even look at their own youth system.

Frankly I don't really care, it doesn't affect my team at all.

Arsenal has Quincy, Senderos, Hoyte,Bentley(maybe), Aliaidiere(maybe), The kid who shall not be named, Lupoli, Cesc, Garry(maybe) and Larsson to qualify for this ruling. Arsenal is more then ready for this if it is imposed and you will see even more poaching going around.
Quincy came through the Ajax academy; he was picked up as a free agent.

I think Quincy would qualify under the registered for 3 years category as this is his 2nd-3rd year at Arsenal and he's not even 20 yet.

Wtf is BBC on about? That we don't qualify

"Uefa define a homegrown player as somebody aged from 15 to 21, and developed either by that club or a team from the same country. "

Terry, Lampard, Cole, Johnson, Bridge, Pidgley, Watt and we have other players on loan like Carlton Cole but they aren't registed for the CL, but the other 7 are. :S

Youth Team
I remember the time when only two or three foreign players were allowed in football-matches used to be much more open to surprises and teams like Aberdeen,Steaua,Red Star Belgrade,Dynamo Kiev,Mechelen,Dynamo Tbilissi,Gotteborg etc. had their chance to win European titles(which they actually did).Others, like Videoton,Standard Liege etc. could at least reach a European Finals. Over the last ten years,we only watch recycling the same clubs winning(only exception Galatasaray in 2000). England was considered the place where "impossible" results took place every week-in championship and in Cup matches-now,only two teams won the last eight league titles, almost playing against themselves. I don't think this is good for the game, the only sport worldwide where underdogs have so many chances to beat hot favorites. This should change somehow. Maybe it's against EU laws about working abroad, but which one of us actually see footballers as "foreign workers"? Which one of us consider football clubs as "Multinational Companies"? EU laws are one aspect, keeping football alive is another aspect-and let's not forget there have been so many violations of this law, when teams signed young South American or African players with fake EU passports, only to have them play as "EU Nationals". And the price paid if the frowd was clarified? Keep the...players off the field as if it was their fault,as if a Brazilian e.g.youngster suddenly woke up one morning and said "from now on,I am an Italian e.g. citizen". No punishment for the cheating club, nothing. You find it fair and just?

If I understand this correctly, the negative thing of all this is that now young kids will be poached from South America/Africa.

Thats not good. Like Pele once said, its like slavery. :(

heres what Wenger thinks

rsene Wenger is fuming with Uefa's decision to change the rules regarding homegrown players.

The European footballing authorities want clubs to field at least eight so-called 'homegrown' players in their 25-man squads by 2008 and Wenger, who has made a success of recruiting promising teenagers from abroad, is far from happy about the proposals.

Wenger stressed it is up to the Premier League to dispute the regulations but it is clear the Frenchman feels it is not the answer to any of football's problems.

"I feel, yes, there will be a challenge [to it]," he stated. "It's a very bad rule; a rule without thought and with negative effects, especially on the market of young players.

"The clubs will be out to buy very young players for high money, just to make them homegrown players.

"It will be a prize for mediocrity; quality will not be dominant but more where you come from.

"I think it's very important you feel you are the best when looking in the mirror, not because you were born in the right country.

"You will keep 35-year-olds, give them contracts just because they are homegrown to keep up the numbers.

"The best players play and that is the only thing that is good for the game.

"What is the difference between Arsenal's financial potential and ten other teams in the league? None.

"Chelsea will buy the young players for less money. It will be worse as they can create academies all over the world and take the best players in every country and then take them back here.

"It is an artificial rule. The perverse effects of this rule are not in the spirit of the top level of competition and the education [process]. It is just a narrow look at how we can protect the national teams in completely the wrong way.

"Arsenal cannot challenge it. Only the English Premier League can accept or not accept.

"Uefa want this for European competitions and then it's down to every country to go with the rule or not.

"It could happen that the rule only exists in the European Cup."
