The Azzurri Thread

I enjoyed the Sampdoria Quaqs, but that was a long time ago ...

if his return to Torino inspires him to carry them in Europe, then I'll happily withdraw my criticism of Conte for selecting him in 2014 ...

there'll be no Verratti in the starting lineup today ... no El Shaarawy either; Zaza gets the nod instead ... hope those two don't play at all, and Hiddink's team win ten or twenty nil ...

ok, so that was comfortable, though there were no goals after the red card ... no Balo, no problem? no Pirlo, no problem? we'll see ...

Giac is back!! huzzah!! :puke:

no idea why Conte wants them to sit this deep against a Norway side that is completely void of any quality ... even as the brainless Bonucci unerringly finds a Norwegian every time he makes a vertical pass, they are incapable of producing a shot on Buffon's goal ...

Florenzi is going to get himself sent off ...

Joe, how are you enjoying the era of Pellè? :-D

not sure if you're getting this in Oz, but the English commentators insist on calling him some variation of Pell-er / Pell-uh, instead of Pell-Eh ...

anyway, Conte's team are playing sh!t ... it's a piss-easy group, and they're barely winning, and that too via corners ... also, the friendly victory against Holland has been put into context by Iceland, who've handed the Dutch a defeat by the same scoreline in a competitive fixture ...

Draws far too many parallels with Juve, hopefully the euro is like serie a then and not the champions league...

Our internationals are on ESPN so we get an Englishman and an american with the same problems, the Aussie analysts on the EPL or highlights go with pel-aye though..

Look at how the Italian NT has fallen over the years. This team used to have players like Inzaghi, Del Piero, Canavaro, Maldini, Totti, Nesta, Zambrotta etc. The whole league has fallen significantly. You may fine better talents even in England.

EDIT: this is my first ever post in this thread in 10 years. I don't think I ever even opened it.

Calciopoli was 2006, and Italy have been sh*t ever since - not a coincidence

Interestingly, that was just a few months after Italy won the WC. I think the most talented Italy team in recent years has been around 2000.

Italy used to have more megastars than any country in late 90s and early 00s ... Maldini, Del Piero, Totti, Nesta, Buffon, Pirlo, Cannavaro, Inzaghi, Vieri and some others in one generation ... They all started they career in 90s.

Italy didn't produce a quality star from 2000 ... there are some on and off talents like Balotelli, Cassano and SES ... but other than that nothing ... I don't see all problems in calciopoli, I think academies are not as good as before to produce young talents ... they should look at Germany or Spain model ... Also, the number of foreign players is increasing in top teams ... similar situation like England. I think Mourinho's Inter didn't have any starter Italian player when they won UCL.

Italy reached the Euro final two years ago.

They didn't qualify from group stage in two consecutive world cup ... that's more alarming ... You can't judge things based on Euros ... Czech Republic became second in 1996 ... they didn't even make it to 1998 world cup ... same thing about 1992 Denmark.

Italy will rise again, they always do, in 82 and 2006 none expected them to win.

I like Italian football but first Serie A should rise again and more youngster should be produced ... the fact that Pelle (mid table EPL team player) starts for Italy is just sad ...

If Serie A rises again teams will buy superstars instead playing homegrowns players and Italy will become England.
