and in my opinion, hockey is the only sport where physical conditioning is not only equal to, but exceeds football. They are playing 30 minutes a game albeit with short 2-3 minute rests, but while going full speed, skating (more physically taxing than running, in my opinion) while expecting physical contact and moving around in an enclosed space. And come playoff time, THEY have to play until someone scores. Jagr's 16 lost pounds in water weight, anyone?? In a perfect world, baseball players would be making what hockey plalyers make and vice versa

Definitely, bro. I've only started to appreciate the amount of muscular endurance needed for hockey recently and I've gotta say.......WHAT ******* HORSES........sheesh.

Hey, one more point.........how about the refs? I realize that those ****ers are carrying 1/10 the equipment but they're on the ice for the whole sixty minutes and most of the time skating from one end to the other. You know? It ain't like they're being shifted every thirty seconds to a minute.

i think it sucks to end a game in pk's, but i dunno what a better alternative is. i don't think you can extend the game any longer. i guess the best option would be to just add an extra sub or two in the overtime periods.

For any knockout game book a reserve day...this system will probably have to be tried at the international level before it can be implemented at the club level. For the World Cup, perhaps the reserve day would be the following weekend. If the game ends in a tie, the game can be replayed on the reserve day...additional revenue. If it is too hard to do this logistically then perhaps remove the 3rd place game (from the World Cup) and replace it with this one.

If after the reserve game is played the score is still level then start removing players, one at a time, from the team with more accumulated yellow cards. If team A has 6 and team B has 8 then a max of 2 of team B's players could be removed.

And BTW Gold is better than Silver so dammnit, BRING BACK THE GOLDEN GOAL!

They should do one on ones. Bring out the small goals, do a 1 on 1 (or 3 v 3), first to 5 goals wins.

Replay matches are too difficult to implement nowadays (remember they were used in WC's by the 30's...), not only physically for the players but logistically. Eg., imagine buying a ticket for a WC final only to know the decision will actually be in another match. Or then, a World Cup lasting an extra week - just how much the clubs would bitch about their pre-season...

And about Golden Goals, weren't they removed exactly because they couldn't help ET's to be more offensive? Most ET's played this summer that I can remember of were quite entretaining, and in none both teams gave up on attack at the same time. With Golden Goals, the far of being scored was probably more dominant indeed. PK's may be often unfair and so but there are very few pretical ways of solving an 1-legged final with everyone tired to death. Allowing two more subs could make Extra Time more significant, it would benefit squads with good depth as well.

And finally, taking off players from the pitch on Extra Time every few minutes would be cool; more space to play can put extra spice in any game. However, both teams shold be affected equally - there is no 100% fair statistical criteria to get a team an advantage in football. Extra subs would be a must too, as running the whole field on 8 v 8 is not exactly easy to do after a full match.

I liked watching the shootouts back on MLS. That could be exciting and it some skill aswell.

why not a golden goal extra time, every 5 minutes take a player off the field.....

Hey, what about

(...)golden goal extra time, every 5 minutes take a defender off the field? (6)

PK is the only way...

Golden goal is proven to be detrimental.. and its against the spirit of the game. You should be able to know how long teh game will last, you will play for 30 minutes extra time... there really is no reason why we should end it after one team scores...

Heck, why dont we just play first team to score wins during normal time? If that is a stupid idea, i dont see why golden goal is any better.

Replays won't work too well, because the replay could also be a draw! So we'll need a genuine solution.

As for play til you drop, removing players every 5 minutes.. that's crazy! There will be horrific injuries (muscle tear, twisted knees, etc) and it will get ALOT more boring, not more interesting. Playing 7 - 7 on a full size patch after playing for 90 minutes already is near physically impossible for even the top atheletes..

You'll just end up with alot of long balls and sluggish play..

Also, what would happen in those situation is teams will defend rather than attack to make sure they dont lose (another reason why golden goal wasnt that good an idea). You may eventually end up with Barthez vs Buffon, 1 - 1!

Oh.. and the fact that this will create alot of incentive for players to dive (or geniunely collapse) and decide the game from a PK..

PK is the only way.

That Polish dude Kuszczak would love it for sure :)

But true, I am yet to see a fully solid altrenative to PK's.

For what i recall in the final of 1978 if Argentina and Netherlands would have tied after the extra time they would have played another match few days later.:o
