i think what it comes down to is that, rightly or wrongly, european clubs are seen as the strongest in the world (certainly they have the largest payrolls) so there isn't the interest level in watching a top european team play what is at least viewed as a lesser club on the world stage, especially when the game takes place in a significantly different timezone.
