Carrick never goes forward, so he seems like just about the fucking definition of a defensive midfielder.

The only data I can find shows them with almost identical average positions, common for dual holding midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 or more disciplined 4-4-2. In a sense then, your argument that "you did not play with a DM" could possibly be interpreted as true because of the ambiguity of the English language, but only because United played with two of them rather than a single one.

I did say a few posts up that if you consider the role Carrick played a "defensive midfielder" role then yes United played with a defensive midfielder every single game. Personally, I interpret that role as a "holding midfielder" but some don't make the distinction.

Holding midfielder and defensive midfielder are the same thing. I would also like to say that using average positioning like that misunderstands how roles of players can actually function in a game; just because Scholes played deeper (if he did) means nothing as Pirlo played deeper than Gattuso, but who was the "defensive midfielder" in that lineup.

Looks like Fabregas is on sale. He is 26, will cost about 30 millions. I think we should go for him. He can play as the CM behind whoever the AMF is as long as he has a holding midfielder partnering him.

Clasie is also a player I admire but maybe not as a starter.

Also we'd be stupid to not bid for Kroos. His contract expires next and he is yet to sign a contract. Doesn't look like he'll get a lucrative contract as he wants as well.

It is understood that Fabregas has a £30million release clause written into his contract.

Source: skysports.

Knew that, didn't you?

Yeah I don't think the exact details of the clause are known. Fabregas should have stayed at Arsenal. He would have won the FA cup (H)

van Gaal was never really a huge fan of Kroos, and frankly he can't play as a more withdrawn midfielder. He has competition from Kagawa and Mata at AMC, so I don't see how it makes sense to buy him for Manchester United. Same goes for Cesc actually. If you do feel like raiding Bayern, the best target is Martinez. Every club in the world should be after Martinez.

IMO the best targets for United are Koke, Mangala, and if you do want a star then I can see Robben brought in to fix the wings for a couple years.

But with a holding midfielder they'd be fine, right? At Bayern, Kroos plays as a CM in front of Lahm. Fabregas usually plays CM as well with Busquets the holding mid.

Koke played AMF most of this season I think. Strootman would be great.

EDIT: no he played on the wings mostly according to whoscored.
