2015/16 UEFA Champions League Thread

ter Stegen (H)

But I thought he was a great keeper (even though he isn't trusted in league matches)

How was that a Ter Stegen mistske? If Barcelonas last defender is in center half he has to be coordinated with them and play as sweeper to cut any ball on the back of the defence. You never expect the RB to shot on goal from centre half and few centimeters away from the touchline...

Athletics goal was his mistake for heading the ball to the center instead a side but not todays, that was an awesome goal by Florenzi.

One mistake doesn't really define a player. Neuer has done some silly stuff leading to conceding goals as well. Dejan Stankovic is the first name that comes to mind.

But if actually mean it then I gotta agree with you, because ter Stegen kind of looks nervous between the posts and I've witnessed him messing up more often than not. Also he tries to be too much like Neuer. He's a bit inconsistent I'd say. Seen him have spectacular matches as well obviously. Bayern last season. Also I kind of unlike him for some reason, so that might be one of the reasons I'm being so harsh on him as well.

He was too far out of the goal! If he's so far up the pitch that Florenzi looks up and thinks "oh I've got a chance!" then he's wrong. Barcelona was not in possession. That ball didn't have to be hit so perfectly to still have gone in the net.

Lucho said it's his mistake because he asks ter-Stegen (and Bravo) to play like that. Bravo is lucky, some guy at Malaga tried that too 2 weeks ago. Close but still.

Ter Stegen is perfectly positioned to cut a possible Florenzi cross which wpuld be the most habitual decision, no one would expect he would shot from that position. That was clearly prepared by Rudi Garcia, they knew Barça GK plays advanced so they tried to surprise there, good for them.

So every week someone should shoot from halfway because the Barca keeper is going to be at the edge of the box

Arnau that's a load of rubbish! Florenzi isn't even known for his mean shot which doesn't exist.

Hahahahaha Mus that's just ter Stegen. Every week they have Bravo in goal who's more accustomized to La Liga and he doesn't want to be Neuer.

How many of those tries ever go in though if you happen to see one during a professional match? The manager would probably go ballistics should some player with not so good shooting ability try this and lose the possession, thus the ability to attack.

Inigo Martinez should be allowed it once in a while though. I believe he scored two crackers like that during one season like a few weeks apart from eachother a few years ago.

A cross from there? You really need the keeper to cut out a speculative piece of sh*t like that?

I'm not saying he needs to be on his line, but he was way too far out for his team being out of possession.

Hell, teams against Barcelona don't get good chances, if that's seriously how ter Stegen is asked to play, expect a lot more attempts like this.

Huh what? It's a known fact that Barcelona plays a very high line and their keeper is at times almost playing as a sweeper and it's been like that for some time. Always being further out than other teams' goalkeepers just because how much possession they have, also always being available for a pass, being good with feet etc. You know all this anyway it's pointless of me to even tell you this Nimreitz.

It's not like it's some new brilliant tactic, goals like that have always been scored. Neuer probably plays the highest and so many players attempt stuff like that sometimes against him. But his awareness and positioning is so good that he rarely messes up.

ter Stegen just wants to emulate Neuer and has a similar type of playing style. sh*t I don't remember so well since I don't exactly watch Barca all the time, but I believe Bravo doesn't get that far out, but still more than Rayo Vallecano's goalkeeper for example.

My argument isn't "He should be on his line all the time." My argument is that he should know when he needs to be a little further back because of the situation. Most top level professionals can score from that range. I'm honestly curious what kind of cross you think Florenzi could play from that range that would require keeper intervention outside the box that ter Stegen couldn't get to if he was 3 meters further back towards his goal.

Fair enough makes sense. Yeah some of the class A professionals have a really good eye for it. The Basque dudes like Inigo Martinez whom I mentioned earlier and Xabi Alonso for example. Pjanić deserves a mention as well. This fucking goal he scored against us in the US in some pre-seaosn friendly. Spectacular.

I think I would question Florenzi's mental stability had he tried to cross the ball into the box in that situation. Especially when there wasn't even proper buildup going on and nobody in the box either. But alright maybe something like Beckham's famous cross to Raúl would do it. Although it would require even a crazier spin from that range (EDIT: no actually Beckham's was even from further out) and a proper striker with an eye for a goal to poach it in.

This one for those who haven't seen it -

EDIT: Or what the fuck actually I meant this one to Ronaldo. That's why I was surprised that the first one was from that far out. Hadn't even seen it.

Kampl is very good. Good runs with the ball, technique to keep the ball, always well positioned to receive the ball and a hard worker... Surprised Dortmund let him go.

Only realized this weekend that they let him go. Weird since he arrived in January, I think.

Arsenal are truly fucked under Wenger in the Champions League. You get 3rd or 4th to get run off the pitch by Zagreb and Olympiakos.

So did any other club enter the competition this year, or just Bayern?

Lewandowski with 10 goals in a week.
