I am from the states and I have never seen a soccer (football) game in person, but I want to tell you one thing I want to do before I die (if it still happens at the matches). I want to go to a Liverpool or Celtic game when the crowd sings "You'll Never Walk Alone", and hear and see it in person. I stumbled upon some of the youtube videos where the crowd is singing, and I was so touched and moved to see such passion and honor shown by the fans and crowds of these two teams. I have read the story of the Liverpool tragedy, and pray for all of you fans who were affected by the loss of lives that day. Sorry if I wasted a thread on something that might be insignificant to some people, but it touched me beyond belief. Thanks from a 47 year old FIFA 09 player.

That is not a waste of a post, welcome to the beautiful game my friend - and yes, You'll Never Walk Alone is a common sound at Celtic and Liverpool games. I'm a United supporter, and I can tell you that for the most part when a tragedy occurs to a club - it touches not only supporters of the club concerned, but all football fans (at least those barring a mindless minority)

United lost their 1958 team in the Munich Air disaster, Rangers lost fans at Ibrox, Bradford had the fire, Liverpool have had Heysel and of course, Hillsborough.

And beyond that every football fan knows that it was only by the grace of God, that the events at Hillsborough didn't occur at another ground, and that the memorial at Anfield is not somewhere else with our own name upon it.

MikeyM,

I'll get across the pond one day and experience some matches, and pay my tributes to the teams and their supporters of which they are so proud and passionate. I look forward to cheering on United while on my journey. Thank you for your kind words.

YES! (H)

The crowds and fans in Europe (football in general) have a bigger and more hardcore fan base. I'm not saying the Cowboys or Patriots don't have a large fan base, but the passion and honor shown by the fans is decreasing but to have these kinds of fans is great. There are some games (US) that fans dont create that much of an atmosphere as you see at Anfield or Nou Camp or at the Barnebeu. At baseball games you see fathers bringing their kids to the game for that 'ball'. In England -and Europe you see generations of families supporting one, and only one team. But to be honest, European football fans > Baseball/Football/Basketball fans.

Siawash you are so right about the fans here in the U.S. I am a Cowboy fan, but there is no comparison to the generations of fans in Europe when it comes to standing by their team and supporting them for a lifetime. It is so quiet at the stadiums here, which is really pathetic.

Bobby,

Thank you very much for the video...I'd not seen that one. I just wish I were a tad big younger, so when I come over there to see for myself some real football, I could "fit in" a little better. Anyhow, thank you for the post, and I guess I can learn to love Tokyo and its supporters too. ;)

Yeah it is. I have experienced both. I live in VA but lived in Europe too.

I actually hate it how other clubs around the world start using that song too. I think the Liverpool supporters should get the exclusive rights for that song. Go find your own anthem.

Cheers for the thread and the sentiments expressed, Brian. There is nothing wrong with being a 47 year old Fifa player, there is far less risk of injury! As to the Liverpool/Celtic/Tokyo(?) anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone", I get the same feeling when I see my beloved Reggae Boys play at the National Stadium here in Jamaica. When I join thousands of people standing and singing the anthem, it is something that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. I wouldn't have that at the English Premier League club I support, (Bolton) unless perhaps I started up a chant of "Megson Out!" but that's a story for another thread. ;)

I'll hopefully see you in Jamaica one day Keegan, thanks for the kind words. If I were younger, i would hope to meet Shelly-Ann Fraser when I got there :). What a great track and field team ya'll have, I am thoroughly impressed. I would love to see the Reggae Boys play in person at National Stadium. Take care and be safe.

it isn't a song made by some liverpoolian to become their antheim so the teams are free to use it if they want. :(

No but the song has become the anthem of Liverpool. They started to use it first and because it had success other clubs started copying it.

How would you feel if I started singing El Cant del Barca the next time Ajax plays in the Amsterdam ArenA?

but el cant del barça its an antheim made for barça and i would love to see ajax fans sing it :D.

The Song was made for the musical "Carousel" and had a great success when in 1963 the song was recorded by the rock and roll group "Gerry and the Pacemakers", like the Beatles they were born in here and were Liverpool fans and the first fans to sing that song in a stadium were the us the Liverpudlians. WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED TO ADMIT THAT SONG IS OURS?:D
