Xbox 360 FIFA 2008 first impressions

SlowSilver, and everybody else who loves football, The way our minds have been coded is to think of football games as a "game" more than a simulation; many people until now hate simulation games, because they just think is doesn't make sense, while the truth is that it makes much more perfect sense to the point that it might feel weired when compared to other "games".

Guys, I said it before and I say it again: do not compare FIFA 08 to any version of PES, including PES 2008, or to any version of old FIFA titles. the game now is very real, you should think out of the usual and reorganize your system to the real life football physics and laws.

SlowSilver, in real football matches, Ronaldinho dose not run like a tiger all the time like in PES! He actually sometimes suck so much that the couch sends him off right after the first half; Ronaldinho is a scary player, he dose stuff quick and in a sudden move, true, but only few times a match. Whenever I watch a Barca match I always want to see Ronaldinho run and break and burn stuff, but the reality: He doesn't; all the clips you see all over the web about his amazing skills are only seconds from the many many matches he played, and if you compare the amount of skill he has between reality and a game such as PES it becomes ridiculous and repetitive! It is like choosing Barca for Ronaldinho or Messi only!

Don't forget that in real matches all players do a good job, football is a "Team" game; when I use to play PES I use to think of Barca as a winning team all the time! now in FIFA 08 I think of them as a team that might or might not win, it all comes to the team work, making it possible for a lower stats team to win any match against Barca, just like in real life. It all comes to team work.

All football players have their good and bad moments, and that is the case in FIFA 08, you feel that everyone has an equal opportunity to shine, that's what makes me love it! It is a simulation more than just a game.

About the headers, it is expected at this stage to have easy headers but don't forget that the demo plays at 2nd level difficulty, you still have the third level and the forth level which I'm sure are going to kick our asses down!

Seriously he said ronaldinho like he would've said henry or etoo or whoever, that's beside the point that whole text of yours explaining ronaldinho's life of football. Henry doesn't run faster than any Man Utd defender. I'm pretty sure if you'd watch some relatively old games of arsenal you'd have a different idea. I shoot with zambrotta I almost forget it's a back right who's doing it. It's true, there's very little difference in terms of who's better and that's simply isn't right. It's natural that vidic wins a header against messi or etoo, it's unlike he'd sprint out henry while the second one began first ;_;

What saddens me is that 99% of you guys haven't even tried PES and just say 'oh pes is arcady because that smart guy who loves FIFA said so' It's f*cking not. So what the speed is faster? In fifa 2008 you can't do a decent sprint for crying out loud, you can't do any faster goals than that thing. PES can be slow when you're playing with hard cpu. But I guess you wouldn't really know that would you?

Trust me mate. I ve been playing PES for a long time (PES3 PES4 PES5 PES6). The game just don't give me the felling of real football as the next generation fifa does. Especially i hate the arcade style the players are running. Just give the fifa demo more chance and you will find out how many thinks the new fifa offers. The animations the shooting system and passing is two steps above PES. The tempo in the game is really how the game played..

btw fifa08 is really better than the older fifa series.. and of course is waaayyy better than pes

Sorry to say mate but your wrong I too buy fifa and pes every year and have done fot the last 4-5 years......

and in that time fifa have done so much to better the game were pes have done next to nothing to please us real football fans...

and i think that it is realy sad that year after year thay do it to us don't you.

you realy need to play more Fifa and stop slateing it.........

and i'm not saying that Pes is crap but i think that Fifa will be the better football game this year (NEXT-GEN)

What camera is every1 using? So far the cameras offered are killing the game for me. The default is too far out and the dynamic cameras skew the view as well as the depth causing it difficult to view good passing lanes esp on the far side. Does EA include new cams in the real game or are these the only ones offered?

So I just read through 5 pages of posts and I agree with what most are saying that this is a great version of FIFA. However, not one person has made a comment about about the absolutely horrid defense played by your CPU teammates and the perfect passing game played by the CPU.

Dear EA,

WHY do my CPU teammates back off of an attacker when he approaches the net inside the 18yd. box? Honestly, in a game I played this morning, Henry took the ball into the box the closer he got to the goal the more my teammates backed off. That is just stupid.

Where are my teammates on every CPU goal kick? The goal kick always goes to midfield to a CPU opponent and no one is within 10 yards of him. WTF?????

WHY on every CPU corner kick do my defenders leave a CPU attacker wide open in the box for an easy header (that's never gone in)?

WHY is it impossible to win headers in the box? (EDIT: Because no one is within 5 yards of the player receiving the cross)

Most will say switch control of the players. Easier said than done. It wouldn't matter anyway because the closest defender would never be able to make a play on the ball because he's too far away.

WHY does the CPU routinely have a pass percentage above 90%. EA, have you EVER watched a football match??????? I have yet to see a team have every long ball and cross land perfectly every time. Folks, that is not simulation. The sad thing is that the demo is on the Semi Pro level. At the higher levels it will be downright impossible to play because EA took the lazy route and just perfected all the CPU skills and probably did nothing with the AI. Higher levels should have better adaptable AI not perfect skills.

With all of that being said, EA did a great job with many many aspects of the game. Unfortunately, the game is unplayable because of the horrible defense.

Congrats EA. Back to the drawing board.

Same here. I should have received a couple of penalties and freekicks, but nothing happened. In similar situations I floored the CPU and it's a freekick against me. Which go in the nets like 85% of the time. That's complete bollocks.

One time I didn't even hold the A button, just walked into another player and bam, yellow card, free kick and goal!

I got so upset and threw my controller through the room and unfortunately broke my left shoulder button. Which pisses me off even more.

Yes you can. Flick the right analogue stick and the player sprints. You can also move players towards the ball too but I guess some people don't bother to find out.

i have played the demo for so many times and usually cpu passing percentage is 65%-80%

but in fifa07 55%-75% as average.

I've played the PC version as well and it blows away the 360 version. Your screenshot is from the PC version.

The 360 version is where the problems exist that I was talking about. Thus the name of the thread.

Carlos*bauer, sorry man, but all the stuff that you were complaining about in your older post is not making any sense to me; zero sense man!

Don't get me wrong, and with no offense at all to you or your opinion, all your points seem to be faults made by you!

Let's take it step by step:

1. I have never experienced any defender backing off an attacker when they approach my goal! As a matter of fact, I control the defenders so that they cover the area perfectly enough that I enjoy being a defender! And if you mean by "backing off" defenders running back slowly, then that is perfectly normal, when an attacker is heading towards the opponent goal defenders should start backing off and creating some kind of a "vacuum" to keep short distance between them and their goal and then jumping right on the path of the attacker, and of course the last step is down by you to perfect when playing FIFA 08, this whole situation assures that if one defender slides and misses the ball another defender can cover up for him without leaving lots of space near the goal, this has been in real life football since football was created and nothing about it is wrong, UNLESS if you compare it to PES, in PES this situation doesn't happen at all, good for "gamers", not good for "love football gamers".

2. Man, are you joking?!!! Do you use your radar well enough? do you even switch players and move them around? For god's sake this is not PES or FIFA 07, it will not happen automatically, try practicing more and move the players much more than you use to do in old football games. I can't recall experiencing this situation at all, unless it was my mistake!

3. Another mistake by you! When the CPU or you shoot a corner kick, a yellow sign appears in the ground, this yellow sign is very similar to the one PES and some old FIFA titles, but this time it is different, why? in other football games, when this yellow sign appears it is always "just" leads you into where the ball is supposed to fall, but in FIFA 08 it has an extra job done by you, the new job that you should do is to make your player run towards that yellow sign, when you are running towards the sign forget about where you want to hit the ball, example: looking at the screen, The player you are controlling is bellow the yellow sign, the ball is in mid-air, you should make your player run for the ball and keep holding that direction in which he was running (up in my example), if you get the ball the player will hit the ball far of the goal and to the direction you were holding, in PES, you chose any direction you want and the computer will automatically make your player run to the yellow sign, in FIFA again, you do the running with the header, which is super more real and feels more random than ever, just like in real football games, if the defender has a small chance of getting the ball with his head he would run and hit the ball in the same direction he is running towards just to clear it away of the goal.

This was lots of explaining, I which I can do a video, in fact I'll try making one to show you what I mean, I'll see what i can do about this.

4. You can do headers every where if you follow what i told you in point 3.

5. You see again, I hate to say this again, but man, the reality is: you are so weak that the CPU is enjoying open, wide, free, long passes without you intercepting them. Don't get me wrong again, but if you let the CPU enjoy passing every ball between each other then this is definitely your mistake. I can't say anything more about this except that the maximum passing value the CPU get when I'm playing is 70% (72% to be precise), and that is only because I'm new.

EA has done a great job with FIFA 08 next-gen, but the problem this time is with us, and how our little gaming minds have been washed and programed to like football "PES" style! lame, old and robotic stuff. clear your brains, watch real football then play FIFA 08 and believe me you'll love everything about it.

If FIFA 08 was a lady I would be shagging her on my bed 700 years ago! lol, I'm not sick you guys.

just wanna say that fifa07 for xbox360 was simply poor, players seem to be like 60years old grandfas, there are such few leagues, there is no replay, hope the new title will be better

Fifa 08 is a great improvement from 07,i can't wait till next friday for the full game to come out.
I'm just downloading PES 08 from the market place to compare them,to see which demo is better.

believe me that's very trivial. 360 version is the way to go. its a completely different game.
