World Cup 2014 bidding

Bobby

The Legend
Bids are being put in this year. It's supposed to go to South America, but FIFA have stated that if South America isn't ready they'll take bids from the other confederations.

South America:
Brazil (Official)
Colombia (Official)
Argentina & Chile (Possible)
Venezuela (Possible)

North America:
United States (Stand-by)

Asia:
Australia (Stand-by)

Brazil looks the strong favorite, but the stadiums in Brazil are in really bad shape (outwith the Maracana which is being redeveloped for the 2007 PanAmerican Games, and the Beira-Rio which Inter have worked their asses off getting up to World Cup standards). Brazil is getting a new stadium, but it's in Rio which is where the Maracana is and FIFA doesn't like using 2 stadiums in one city because it causes horrible gridlock.

Argentina obviously has big stadiums (again, too many in one city though) and Chile has some decent ones.

Venezuela is getting seven new stadiums between now and 2014.

Colombia's stadiums would require heavy redevelopment, and with FARC running around I can't see them getting it.

Australia and the United States could host it without much of a problem which is why they're on stand-by. England could possibly be there aswell, but they're looking to win 2018 outright.

i hope for peace sake's, that argentina and chile wouldn't do that

too bad argentina and uruguay are not having a very good relationship right now, coz that would be excellent, argentina-uruguay 2014; i'd put my votes on that one

i know argentina alone won't do it for the reason you gave, excellent stadia un buenos aires city and province, but not in the rest of the country (great ones in rosario and mendoza, but no more than those); with uruguay (or chile in the worst case) would have different great places to have matches

Buenos Aires, has only 2 stadiums worth for a world cup and those are Vélez's and River's the rest are ****.

- Catamarca is getting a brand new stadium for the teams there.
- San Luis is remodeling their stadium.
- The Olympic stadium of Cordoba.
- The "giant of Salta".
- Rosario Central's stadium in Rosario.
- The stadium of Mar Del Plata.
- The stadium "Ciudad de La Plata".
- The stadium of Mendoza.
- Either one of the stadiums of Avellaneda.

If there was going to be a world cup in Argentina, probably Tucumán would make a stadium, probably they will make one with or without a world cup in the way since their biggest stadium only holds 25,000 people. But with a stadium in Tucumán you'd have 10 stadiums outside of Buenos Aires, so probably they could use only 2 from Buenos Aires, "el fortin" and "el monumental".

But besides Brazil the candidates don't seem good. Why not China i heard they have nice stadiums? Or why not England?

Plus i would rather not have a world cup be hosted in Argentina, it takes really a lot of money.

China can't bid because of Korea and Japan 2002. England is aiming for 2018.

There was a rumor of the Saudis wanting a world cup, but there's no way in hell that would work. It'd be WAY too hot along with other things.

You don't know what you're missing. It's an unbelievable experience to have the world cup in your country. Apart from the matches i visited, our cities were crowded with tourists from australia, korea, japan, usa and ecuador who were partying all night and watching matches in cafes, pubs and large screens on public places. For four weeks everyone was a football fan.

The experience is great only if the country is ready to have the World Cup staged there. Germany's transport system wouldn't collapse, the structure is good enough, there are enough hotels and such. If Brazil gets the World Cup in 2014 and things stay as they are now, it won't be a good experience for Brazilians. It'll be embarassing... 1950 was not a good world cup, Maracana was rushed to be ready in time (some people do brag about it being built quickly...)

Brazil will have a taste of what it feels like to stage a big event this year in Rio (PanAm games)... I know it doesn't come close to the World Cup, but we're already having trouble with that... Some competitions are not even confirmed, as some places haven't been constructed yet...

Brazil is not ready yet, and I believe won't be ready in 2014... give it to Australia, Canada or Argentina.

Is the Morumbi all seated?

As much as i hate the thought of having brazil as a host (guess who'll win... boring!) i think it's time to give them the world cup again. Though I don't think it's right to talk about "deserving" to be host (there are so many countries with great football fans), they really should be host once again.
I don't think money should be the first reason. It doesn't have to perfectly organized, it's about the games.

The UK has twice the population of australia, so i may doubt this one.

As an Australian, I'd love to see us hosting the biggest event on the planet - but to be honest I think South America deserves a chance to host this time around, then 2018 looks like it could head back to Europe and England, but hopefully we will at least get it by 2022...

I don't think it is, though I'm not up to date with the Bambidome...

Rumours are that if Brazil get 2014, Morumbi wouldn't host any matches

I hope the Aussies get it. Argentina has safety issues, and Brasil doesn't look ready enough.

Like South Africa and Brazil didn't have any problem.:boohoo:

Also 7 years left for the thing, so things don't need to be ready next year already.

Heard some rumors about Russia is going to bid for 2014, and some talks say that if Ukraine and Poland wins Euro 2012 bid, Russian delegation will decide to wait until 2018.
