The great community, the fact that it's better than all the competition, the amount of mods to make this look authentic, the smooth character animations, the realistic gameplay, the great Master League mode.

That's about it...other than a weak commentary and other trivial stuff, it's a great game.

Well, even if it was only stickmen and in black and white and no stadium, I'd still buy it over Fifa. Why...? The Gameplay! -

Absolutely brilliant.

No (verry, verry few if any) scripts at all.
Ball physics is also top notch.
All the graphics and sound just acts as a bonus to me.

How about the sheer difference and randomness of the game?
Or the class difference between different players.

When using France or Arsenal, no matter who my opponent (CPU) is, I would dominate the game the entire time.
Switch to a medium team, say Czech, then it's 50-50 against similar teams.

Go down lower, with USA or Australia, i'm just sitting back and going for counters.

Use Saudi or PES United and I get killed.

Note i'm playing 5 * on all of them.

It's just brillant how in 1 game, I can beat France with Holland 5-0, then next game, I lose 2-0 to Argentina with Brazil.

Having to adjust to different players with different style ROCKS!
no scripts like FIFA>

The editability

The fact that every match looks different and you don't end up scoring the same goals, or conceding the same goals

The tactics depth

The fact that every player FEELS so different to control, depending on his stats.

In a nutshell: BECAUSE IT'S THE MOST FUN I HAD PLAYING A GAME SINCE SENSIBLE WORLD OF SOCCER (back in Amiga times)

I can think of many, many things I would change about it. Its the best football game on the PS2 and PC by far though(which tells you how s*** FIFA is).

1. 360 degree analogue movement
2. Power adjustible rather than height adjustible shooting(makes sure rubbish players really can't score, unlike Gary Neville, Sol Campbell, Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole playing as england on 4*)
3. Better Keepers - having the keeper flap at the ball every time it is slightly to the side of him is unrealistic.
4. No auto-adapting AI. Sorry, but this kills the game on any difficulty above 2*. I would rather see it there as an extra option, especially for ML. On ISS '98 if I lost, I felt it was entirely my own fault wheras here I'm at the whim of the computer. It decides whether I'm going to win or not.
5. More defensive stats - the game has stats that are far too attack oriented - on a game that is far more defensive than most football games.
6. Allow you to curl the ball when you feel like.

I'm not too bothered about things like editing or graphics, and whilst it is flawed in that respect I don't care about it.

Also, the conversion(to the PC) has got to be one of the crappest conversions ever. Doesn't change the game, just a fact.

But 1 to 5 are some things that definately need to be changed.

JUst so you don't think I'm being biased either way...

Things I would change about ISS '98

1. Make it more difficult to score from long shots
2. Make the keepers easier to be more realistic.
3. Make the over-the-top through ball much less effective.
4. Make the referees stricter.
5. Put more emphasis on control of the ball(first time passes should be a lot more difficult)
6. Have a better career mode than ISS 2000(Something between ML and that career mode where you take your team up- it could be brilliant)

I won't bother with fifa because I hate it so have never bothered to play newer editions.

EDIT: PS. The fact that this is all I can find wrong with PES shows how good it really is. The most fun playing football on a computer/console since ISS '98.

what the..? im pretty sure the thread said what you like. Not what you would change. Some of the little things i like besides gameplay , player stats , graphics etc are:

The way the referee plays the advantage.

The way the CPU goes for all out attack if theyre one nil down and 5 mins to go.

The way some players are pushed to the ground more easily than others i.e. del piero v vieri

They way different refs have different levels of strictness

Signature kicks and ways of running i.e. beckham taking free kicks , henry running.

I love game because it is very realistic. You don't see many people run past the whole team and pop a shot in the top corner in real life and you don't see it often in PES/WE

Also if you score a superb goal you really feel it. Just like if you miss you scream at the TV (or i do :$)

Best Gameplay in a football game ever! That's enough for me. I don't care if the graphics are not the best they could be, it's ALL about gameplay!

I think one PC Mag summed it up, they said and i agree it does all the basics well. For example the passing feels like passing- the ball bobbles, it spins, hell it moves and its crisp it feels liek passing same with the shooting-finding space to shoot, over do it and its over or wide. But for me the best thing is the ball physics, this is what makes football so unprecitable and makes this game feel real the bounces the deflections the spin make you feel as though there is no script and that the ball is not on rails, if you go back to playing Fifa04 it makes that feel terrible!!

For me just now its Love Hate ..how many out there have 6plus foot defenders and with a 5ft 9/10 forward in between your DF's at freekick and corners , the ball comes in a you press (shoot) to clear and what happens "nothing" the 3 of you jump your DF's fall on there arse's and the forward has a shot a goal.. near every time theres 2 on 1 this happens. I don't know how many games I have lost for this!

Can you turn off auto defend ,the one where the CPU clears the ball for you? I have noticed another thing in DF when a corner comes in ( say DF the goal to the left, I angle my analog stick up the park holding it to the right. My defender heads the ball across the goal????? Is that auto-defend or is there something wrong?

that apart I love this game

90% disagreed. Ref likes to call advantadge when you'd have an obvious 1 on 1, or even if your player was alone in front of the goalkeeper. I find it annoying most of the times. If it's called in mid-field, then it's fine, but unless the CPU got the ball or you had a ruined attack play, the ref shouldn't call advantage in the three quarters of the pitch..
