Why oh why won´t my DVD play?

I installed FIFA 07 and it played fine several times and then only seemed to play on one in every three or four attempts at playing but now it is as if the DVD is just not being detected. It is driving my son mad (and he in turn is driving us mad too!).

I have tried turning off all the processes running concurrently (except explorer and tskmgr) but it makes no difference.

I assume the computer is up to it because it has worked without problem previously, so...what am I doing wrong?!!!

Hi, I agree with tizmo, have you noticed any scratches? Also try a cd/dvd drive cleaner. These are disks that have the little brushs that clean the laser head in the drive. Memorex makes a pretty good, inexpensive one.

You need to update the firmware on your DVD drive. Its not the DVD, its your computer.

Thanks to all - the DVD has a handful of tiny, inconsequential looking short hirline scratches on it (it is brand new). I've cleaned the heads and very carefully cleaned the DVD and it has now played on 3 or 4 more occasions (out of about 8 attempts) - when it plays it is excellent quality with no complaints...it just drives us nuts that it doesn't play every time.
If it plays intermittently could it still be the firmware, and if so...give me a clue how to do that - my Device Manager says it is working properly

I have the same problem. The game worked finely but an our later the game couldn't start anymore. I looked at the Cd and there was a scratch... How could this happen so fast? I can't play with it anymore it don't understand this.
