Real has the best top5 players easily but the starting lineup is really not in balance.
Against Betis (great game, Madrid ) they had the normal superstars Zidane, Raul, Figo, R. Carlos, Helguera, Hierro and Casillas on the field. But then there is Guti, Cambiasso, Makelele and Salgado who are not really that good. Adding Ronaldo there drops out Guti but really Cambiasso and Makelele are jokes in a team like this. It seems that Real is willing to have 90 for and 60 against in goals after the season. Anyway, if Real really has only two mids, two above midfield and two attackers they might have problems when they play against some world-class teams in CL and I think they'll have serious problems in La Primera also at least against Barcelona, Deportivo and Valencia.
To have an example of these teams; Barca has Kluivert-Saviola, Luis Enrique-Mendieta-Riquelme-Xavi-Cocu/Overmars, De Boer-Andersson-Puyol. I think that this is not worse by any means.
To compare these two classic teams:
1. Attack: Raul-Ronaldo vs Kluivert-Saviola. Okay of course the first sounds impossible for a club but Kluivert and Saviola scored both more goals than Raul or Ronaldo last season. So not much difference.
2. Midfield Zidane-Figo-Cambiasso-Makelele vs. Riquelme-Luis Enrique-Mendieta-Xavi-Overmars or Cocu. Great World Cup, Zizou and Figo. I think it's obvious that the second is better (okay Real has more name with two players but the two other are midclass players. Barca has all great except Cocu who's also good.)
3. Defense Hierro-Helguera-Salgado-R. Carlos vs. De Boer-Andersson-Puyol. Okay Real has pretty solid defense with R. Carlos to score goals. Barcelona has Andersson and De Boer who are locks of defense and powerful Puyol who may be the best Spanish defender at the moment (at least he was at the World Cup).
So it's not that obvious that Merengues have the best team. Sorry to not have English, Italian and German teams in comparation, I know Spanish Liga the best.
