Whats the difference between short & direct passing?

Hey guys,
In the tactics menu, under team instructions, whats the difference between the passing styles short & direct? As in a definition for each..
Also, in choosing either , what type of flow will the passing game take?
I usually use short passing, as i see better distribution with it, but its not always efficient. When i see it not working, the i switch to direct, but i dont know the real difference, i just hope it helps.
If i could know differences, the advantages & disadvantages of each style, i think it would help my game, in knowing when to swtich between styles.
It may sound like a dumb question & may have been answered before, but i havent found it in the forum. Please help me out.Thanx in advance.

Direct is the lower league type of build-up. Long balls straight to the attackers. If your players have adequate technique and passing skill, you can play the opponent completely out of position with short passes. If you don't, you might as well go with longer balls to free players, not to lose possesion too much.

decisions is often a good stat to look at for good passers. A player with great passing and great decision-making abilities can afford to be put on longer passing, as he'll just attempt a short pass if nothing else is on.

Just a note.

Well, yeah. It's not like your tactic is like holding your players at gunpoint telling them you'll pull the trigger if they try something different once in a while. :p

depends on your personal. Having a heading 20 jumping 20 striker upfront but with no wingers will certainly push you into a long ball kind of game (H)

on FM05 Liedson was good (if not amazing) in the air, im susprised he cant lead the line for you...

I am surprised too. He doesn't seem to get any long balls. In 20 headers, he gets 5/6 per game. At least I have Quavas Kirk that gets almost every of them.

Who on earth would want short passing? Just direct a long ball to your target man (preferably directly from a goalkick) who then heads it back to an upcoming mid or a supporting striker (H) Works well for me.

Target men's never work for me(although they did in FM 2005), I always stick to lengthy attacks then after a few passes around either my wing backs or my wingers cross in and than either Tim, who runs up to striker position, or one of my strikers finishes it. That's my main way to score and it works as I had 97 goals last season.

Yup, just like me. This is how Liedson or Kirk score the most. And I always have Moutinho running forward to score...I had a season where he scored around 15.

Target men do work, but it has to be the right tactic and the right player for them to. I have to say, it is a lot harder than 05.

Zigic was a wonderful target man for me. He's the ultimate targetman. Vucinic did very well in the target man role too for me, although he has a lot more qualities than just those of a target man. In my AEK Athena game Nikos Lyberopoulos does a good job as well in that role.
