The captain fulfils a number of roles, on and off the field. Off the field, he is the person other players can go to if they have any issues they want to raise with the manager but don't want to do themselves - the captain is in a way the 'midway' authority, someone who has the respect of both the players and the manager.
On the field, I guess he is also the midway person, perhaps guiding tactics, making decisions over penalty takers (well, I think he should if noone is willing to step up), rallying the troops etc. etc. If you can recall the England WC qualifier against Greece, Beckham showed some real leadership by being everywhere and trying to motivate the team when they looked down and out.

this high school team that you want to play for has probably finished its conditioning routines and now runs the daily 1-2 miles routine. if you cant run 1 mile under 7 minutes then you dont deserve to be on varsity period.
