What did the Irish actually achieve ?

They got a hero's welcome home but they only actually won one match and that was against the hapless Saudi Arabians. Draws againt Cameroon, Germany and losing to Spain is really something to celebrate? They played well in the second half of most games but they also played garbage in the first half of most games.

What did they achive? Keeping us away from the WC  ;)
I think they did well in a difficult group, only to go out by penalties... they did not loose a single match in the qualifiers until their lost penalty-shoot-out Well done, even more without Keane. :)

They did well. You can say they didn't win a single game but they didn't lose a single one either. They drew with Germany and Cameroon and could have won both as they have chances in the second half. They could have also beaten Spain if it were not for their poor penalty taking. Beating Saudi Arabia 3-0 is the first time the Irish have scored more than one goal in a World Cup game.

One thing for sure : Rep. of IRELAND managed to achieve the WC finals for the 3rd time. They even get into twice in the Round 16 (1994 & 2002) and Quarterfinalists in 1990. :D
Not to mention, they eliminated the Netherlands in the Pre Qualifying WC 2002 and have good records under McCarthy.

Of course, drawing with Germany, Cameroon, and Spain were still the best achievements for the country like IRELAND.

Now, that's what I call success for Rep. of IRELAND. :p

What did they do??? They advanced to the second round from a tough group without their star midfielder, which is no small feat. Let's put it this way, how far did France get without their star mid, Zizou?? Hmmmmm......

???

ok this is a joke poll isn't it ??

when the Irish got their group back in 2000 ... they thought they wouldn't even qualify ... and their adventure led em to latter stages of the world cup.
Plus one thing that always deserves respect is players that give their all ... and that play for their country with pride ... some players should take example on Irish ones (some english ones aswell)
So it's natural that they should be congratulated.
I'm not even Irish but I ould have gone if I could have.

you could ask the same for the KOREANS .. I mean what have they really achieved ??? really ? ok they got to the semis ... but they haven't won anything !! :crazyboy: :crazyboy:

I have nothing to say after that. Totally agree with you!:D

Good luck for the Irish in the next WC!

Yeah, but my point is that they only actually won ONE game of football and that was against Saudi Arabia, who are not exactly a world power.

I was supporting them and good luck to them. But the hero's welcome home they got was over the top considering they only win one game against Saudi Arabia. They didn't actually win a single game against a decent team.

They did draw (and deserved to beat one) of the finalists although that wasn't known then.
But I agree their acheivement was slightly overhyped but expectations were lowered when Keane left

Well, Ireland almost snatched a victory (2 penalties in 90 minutes, but only 1 penalty that they made it) against Spain in the Round 16.
So, it was that close to win.

N.B. Ireland have difficulties to beat top teams from Europe (Germany) and Africa (Cameroon) because Ireland is only the 2nd rated best team in Europe.

If this still doesn't make you understand, I don't know what else to tell you.
