I must admit,I was a big fan of fifa back when 2003 was released. Infact,I was as bad as most of the fanboys posting here, they're only saying fifa's brilliant because either they havent played PES, and assume istantly that its terrible because it doesnt have all the authentic gear/faces, or they enjoy seeing balls travel at 500mph, spinning completly unrealisticly.
When I picked up fifa2004, I was filled with expectation..only to be of course, crushed. Comparisons;
1: Running with the ball;
Fifa2004: Run with the ball in this game means to smack the ball a couple of feet in front of you,and then run to it. Every touch is like a failed pass. And you're often intercepted. Walking is unbareably slow. In all other games,when I get close to the goal, I usually walk up to the keeper,then slot it home. When I was well clear of the defence in 2k4, I started walking, and the defence actually caught up with me, and cleared. The skill button caused me nothing but hassle.
WE7:I: Perfectly done to each player. You can really notice how good a players dribbling each by the amount of skill pts alloted to him. With Damien Duff I can run up the wing with some beautiful skills thrown in. With say, Kevin Kilbane, this would be much much more difficult. You do notice a difference in Fifa too.. but not a very big one. One point to WE7:I
2: Shooting;
Fifa2004: Although I found it quite difficult and somewhat extremly frutstrating to get into the position where I can score, It was as simple as pressing the shoot button from there. There was no missing. But the ballspin is the greatest pisstake I've ever seen. With Zidane, I was about 25Yards out, And I spun a ball out wide, and back in,and it went at 500mph. No. That just doesnt happen. No! The point of fifa2004 was to use OTB to try make space, and score. **** that,I'll just shoot from 25-40 yards out and let the ball spin in.
WE7:I: Shooting in this is actually quite difficult. Even up close, you're under pressure to score. From a simple tap-in to a long-range piledriver, you're always going to just have a little nagging inside of you to jump up and start screaming. This nagging turns into a pounding inside you in multiplayer. Why? Because every goal scored, is 100% down to you. No computer-added swerve. Nothing. There is ballspin in this, although its still not too realistic. Wheras fifa had far far far too much, we7i doesnt have enough. Although it IS close. Some people say the ball doesnt spin at all. Wrong. The ball spins quite perfectly at times, and its up to you to spin it. You see,it depends on the players ability, and how you run at the ball/how the ball comes to you, in we7i. And it also depends on if you hold down r2 or not when shooting. we7i has the bicycle kicks, the chipshots, the screamers and the ******* bells on top to go with them. 1 pt to we7:i
3: Authenticy;
Fifa2004: Fifa once again shows off its licenses by having all real names, licenses, and some faces. Although a LOT of faces and hairstyles are very very far off, as are some stats. Look at Damien Duff for one. He's worth 2mil in fifa, wheras Chelsea bought him for 17mil, after offers of 12 and 15mil were turned down. And even on some of the real faces, some of the hairdo's are wrong. Robbie Keane, for one.
We7:I: The severe lack of licenses lets We7i down sorely in this particular competition. However, there IS an editor at hand, and Wolf's we7:i patch makes it 100% authentic. However, for console users, heavy editing is required. 1pt to fifa2004.
4: Set Peices;
Fifa2004: The free kick system in this is fun. But I cant help but notice the severe lack of ballspin. Ingame, you can stop the ball completly, then hit it and its a beckham and carlos all wrapped into one 500mph shot. Free kicks also go at 500mph, and although they do spin - not nearly as well as normal shots. Free kicks are an improvement from 2k3, where no matter how you hit them, as long as you beat the wall you'd scored, but theres still a lot of room for improvement. The goalie sometimes pulls off unbelievable saves. This happens ingame too. Who the hell saves a 500mph swerving shot? In real life, he'd be thrown back into the goal as if a cannonball hit him. Or his hands would break off. Corners are the most scripted things I've ever seen. Who can hit a circle the side of a few CM, in the same spot, every single kick?
WE7:I: Yes. Perfection. In fifa2k4, in multiplayer, your opponent can move his wall so that you never get your shot past them, as they always know where that ball is going. In we7i, free kicks are an art, right down to who's taking the kick. With carlos, you can use his outside foot style, and bend it out and in. Free kicks have perfect swerve, and always look magnificent. It'll take a real ace to slam one in from 30yards. You can control power, speed, spin, dip, everything with we7:i's controls. But one small messup, and you'll look like Diego Forlan. (Stupid). Corners are done pretty much the same. 1pt for we7:I
And Finally...All the little things
Music: Fifa has the real tracks, but I've hardly heard of any of them. we7i's tunes always get me bobbing my head along. 0.5pts to we7i
Skills: You cant actually beat players in fifa, 1on1, Without the utmost in flukery. In we7i, theres a whole boatload of them to learn, and master, 0.5pts to we7i
Console support: Fifa spans across all consoles, but doesnt work right on some. On the gamecube, I at times get 4/5FPS for large portions of a match. we7i has some slowdown, but I've only noticed it on replays with the ballspin turned on. 0.5pts to we7:i
Multiplayer: we7i is a beautiful game in multiplayer, one of the most enjoyable I've ever played - but unfortuntly, it lacks netplay. 0.5pts to fifa2k4.
Crowd: Fifa's crowd must've all been to a funeral. When they score, They dont move. Just an embaressed little cheer. Although the chants are alright, I thought they were soo much better in fifa2k3. I loved it when the crowd at old trafford chanted keano, and sang glory glory man united. we7i has got quite the amazing crowd. They dont chant much, but they're reactions to misses, and goals, are sublime. The cheering isnt too great, though. But the sight of everyone jumping and cheering when you score.. beautiful. 0.5pts to we7:i
And the final score is;
Winning eleven 7 international: 5
Fifa 2004: 1.5
While fifa2004 might be alright for the very occasional laugh, it'll never be good enough for me to dedicate proper gaming time to. dont get me wrong - its not a bad game. Its just not a good game either. Its an OK game, and nothing more.
Winning eleven7:I is what we would call, "The beautiful game". Everything is fine-tuned to perfection. You get the ball, you use some skills, you cross it in, you miss. You try try try again every different way until you can score. And when you do, the feeling is immense. Its perfectly simple and simply perfect. Its the game that fifa2k4 will never be.
This thread was posted for intelligent discussion on the fifa2k4/WE7:I argument. If I see so much as one fifa fanboy coming in here saying "LIEK OMG U R SO WRONG FIFA = COOL K?!", I'll go and kill someone. If your going to disagree with me, post reasons. REAL reasons. If I can spend long enough posting a real argument between the two games, Im sure you can too.
