WE7-first impressions

I've just played my first 5-6 matches of the this wonderful game and my very first impression is completely positive! I'm quite releived regarding the long wait for the PES3 version for us Europeans. Many improvements are clear after just a glance over the gameplay. There are so many new moves added which was obviously expected but the whole picture is realy getting close to the real thing now. The ball physics are brilliant. The ball is almost completely free and very difficult to control so it's going to be hard to completely master the play. There are more random situations and and a very good thing is that the ball doesn't have patterns like before; a tendency to go out of play every time you clear from the box, or, slip over the out line when the ball gets anywhere close to the line. There is no magnetic effect that was there before - this is absolutely great! The player now never keeps standing, waiting for the ball, being uncontrollable - which was so irritating. Also, the player that loses the air ball or stumbles after a contact will continue to play, being completely controllable. This realy completes the realism factor! There are few new good things like advantage play and handball.Defending is quite difficult but this problem always appears when you play against a very powerful forwards so that it will probably take practice to know exactly how to position and when to charge. The speed is about 10% higher than it should be. I actualy wanted to ask you for a suggestion regarding the attributes that should definitely be brought down, just like it was in PES2, which only became completely playable and real after taking them down. Refs criteria are random which is very real!
The graphics and especially replays look brilliant! Why is there no ref on the pitch and the linesmen?!? Why are these pop-up 'corner kick'/'goal out' signs still there?Goalkeepers have been improved and they have no more unreal reactions and quite a few moves have been added to them too. Shooting is also more real, you need more time now to get a clear shoot, especially when in contact so you now rather have to pass the ball then shoot from the contact.
That's it for now as I realy don't know what exactly to say about the pile of new features that have been added, which I haven't yet seen and understood, but are for me less important than the gameplay.

One more question for now-how do you change the configuration of buttons for defence(all in Japanese)?

Thanks

Just played few more matches.
The game is definitely too fast. It brings the memory of PES2 when it came out. It was completely unplayeable before editting. Then, it became brilliant!
Now, WE7 it's not as bad, but it definitely needs slower pace for realism effect. You simply don't have time to position properly in defence, and the forward star players often just run over the defending players, not to mention now very often bicycle and scissor kicks. There are too many random situations when the ball gets into the crowded area and you lose control easily. The slower pace of about 10% would fix it all. I hope it'll happen in PES3. The referees whistle at every contact and are in my opinion just a bit too strict, but still way better than in PES2.
I'm delighted with the weather effects on play. Once you play on a wet pitch, you just feel the huge difference and the difficulty of control!
Please suggest the edits of attributes so that I could at least try it out!
Thanks!

True, the game speed is just about fine.

And the game speed option is something TO BE AVOIDED at all costs. It cranks the game to pinball speed !!

After just a few more matches, I have to say, I'm definitely sure it's too fast. The speed, acelleration, dribble acceleration and dribble accuracy atribbutes have to go down by 5 or 10 points (for attacking and middfield players balance has to go down as well). We've played like 15-20 matches so far and not one match was goalless, which definitely looks like PES2 when it came out. Speed gives much advantage to the attacking players and there's no time to react properly, thus the game leaves the impression of pinball side to side action, which is very Fifa alike. I have to say that all of us have been playing PES series for years now and have mastered it quite well. I definitely won't edit the WE7 but I wish they would fix this for PES3 simply because it will take hours to edit, which is meaningless!

i bet they won't... they loved to boast about the "even faster action" when PES2 came out. Back then i was like "please no!!"... it's a shame they decided to take the game speed slider out when the series went PS2. I mean, even FIFA has one...

i know you rather play human vs human but can you talk a little more about the CPU: does it still play constant attacking footie.. how about their accuracy on higher levels? and how do the human-controlled players feel like?

thx

I realy haven't concentrated on the CPU play but all I know is that it's not any more difficult or different comparing to the previous game. I took Croatia against Brazil on a 5 star mode and had no problems in covering and positioning, and creating chances on the other hand. I just played those 2 matches against the CPU, I have to admitt. (I noticed that even the best CPU controlled players still miss lobs)! We spent the whole of last week playing 2 on 2 multiplayer matches and all of us came to the same conclusion: the game is too fast, things simply happen quickly, and it's end to end stuff with that arcade feeling which happened in PES2 when it came out. PES3 will need hours of editting before getting it just right, it's obvious now!
How do you clear the high balls from the 16 y box? We can't do it! Once you try to clear from a corner or a cross the ball gets passed instead of cleared, with the shoot button of course!?!
The advantage play feature is a complete mess!!! It's never right!
Shooting slide was better in PES2 in my opinion! Now you just tap and it flies super fast, just like in FIFA '99!

especially the news that it is too fast (even faster than PES2) and still mindless end to end stuff is bad news indeed... even though one had to be rather naiv to expect it to be otherwise....

but over all, contrary to the rave (and a bit to camp-ish) game reviews that have been linked here to this sounds a little sobering...

guess i'll wait until the PC version comes out and hope to be able to patch it to my preference

Hi Cro thx for the insights..

I feel the same way PES2 edited is bloody close to the beatuiful game. I dont like the sound of the shooting in PES3 the shooting bar in PES2 is great..allows for more skill when shooting by the sounds of it compared with PES3?

I spent hours edting PES2 to get the gameplay balance right..looks like PES3 will be the same..oh well, mite have to get an x-port this time if i have the extra dosh.

btw Cro try these PES2 settings on WE7 perhaps...

(thanks to avon and denirobob from evo forum for the ideas):

-5 Speed/Accel (all)
-5 Dribble Spd (all)
-5 Shot Power/Shot Acc (all)
+10 Teamwork/Aggression and Mentality (all)
+10 Response (Defenders only)
Marking Ability (Defenders and Midfielders only)

I'm glad you're mentioning shooting 'cause I think shooting in WE7 is a bit of a mess! For some simple groung balls you need a lot of space and time to hit, while on the other hand a 25y shots fly superfast after a simple tap that fill 15% of the slide!? This is a bit silly! I know that things need to be random, but it should show exactly how much power you are adding to your shot and it could only differ in the speed of filling depending on a skill of each player! We played another few matches and I can say we have just about started to get things right, but still the same opinion remains about the speed factor. I'll wait for the PES3, your reviews and ideas and then edit! I have to mention a completely silly trick added - an overhead flip!?! What is that? I mean, how many times you see that in real life, once or twice a year?! In WE7 - twice a match! Tricks should be there, but only the real ones and only the very best players should be able to use and execute them properly! You should be complately aware that you simply cannot take a Saudi defender and roll the ball passed the French middfielders!
Thanks!

Can I just ask if they've changed the shooting gauge in WE7 from what it used to be (ie. The height of the shot) to the power of the shot? Unless I've got it wrong all along.

Anyway, the vids I've seen make PES3 look a lot more realistic than PES2, although the game speed does not seem that much different.

On a difficulty scale of 1-10, with PES2 being 5 (just to put it in the middle) how much more difficult is PES3 (or WE7)

CroPE

Youth Team
The game is far more realistic, especialy on the videos, simply for the reason of better ball physics and more and more movements added, not to mention the far better graphics. The problem is in the feeling of realism of each segment, and for me, the speed is most important one. The best thing regarding this is that it can be fixed by editting, so I'm not that worried! I remember how we all freaked out when superfast PES2 came out, but got it all right when we editted it according to this forum's suggestions! Thnks for that again! Otherwise, we would have continued playing good old PES1 with the perfect pace!
Regarding the gauge, I have to say that it's a lot different! I don't understand what they did with lobs! I was realy good in that, but now I just can't get it right! The worst thing is those blasts from far out - you just tap and sometimes even the camera can't catch the ball! Luckily, the keepers are superheroes that can!?! The height goes the same as before - shots from contact fly far over!
I can't say how difficult WE7 is, being with the series for so long. It will definitely take longer to completely master the tricks, but gameplaywise, playing against CPU, it's the same as PES2! If you could win the World Cup with Saudi Arabia!?! on a 5 star mode, you'll probably do it now, in a first or second try!
I don't like playing CPU though! Once you master it, you enter the match 90% certain that you'll win. There aren't so many unpredictable situations and reactions that an intelligent human being can produce, plus it's more fun to screem at or celebrate with a human! Once I get the PES3, after editting, I'll go for cups and master league, and after winning it I'll rarely play CPU again, 'cause we simply play when we gather and have most fun and excitement on a multiplayer mode!

I don't mind the pace of the game in PES2 to be honest, you just learn to control it although you don't get much time on the ball, so I probably won't mind it in PES3.

Totally agree with you about it being more fun to play against other people though. My greatest PES moment was curling in a Becks free kick deep into extra time to beat my bro with a golden goal after tying the game 2-2. I don't find playing the CPU a drag though, although it was a bit boring when I made a superstar team, so I now put restrictions on myself.

I had heard that the CPU is more organised defensively in PES3/WE7 than it was in PES2 though, I hope that that is the case.

Cheers for the reply mate. :)

I have only played like 2 matches vs CPU so far and I can't say much beside that I took Croatia vs Brazil, 5 star, drew 2:2! We are lucky to be able to gather up and play only 2 on 2 matches, twice a week. This realy is fun, as you can imagine. It's real team play and everything around it gets it even closer to the real thing, like communicating, calling for the ball, for cover, or screeming at each other, celebrating, and then analysing and arguing with each other and the oponnents!

(imagine leading three times in a match and them equalising in the last minutes and then celebrating madly the sloppiest goal ever scored - that's called anger and frustration!)

CroPE

Or, completely controlling the match, having loads of chances, hitting the post and the bar, shots 15:3 and you - lose, 0:1, and they go like - Yes!!! at the final whistle!

CroPE,

I felt exactly the same about the speed and the shooting...I thought it was a nightmare and that the game was messed up. We had 3 nights of 4 player action and it was end-to-end ice hockey...I was bitterly dissapointed.

But then....guess what?

We adjusted, started playing football, not forcing it like in WE6FE. Building up play, taking time on shots and waiting for the runs rather then forcing them.

Since then, I have to admit that this is BY FAR the best game Konami has released. The speed is PERFECT. The shooting system is enhanced and better and the overall fun factor surpasses that of WE6FE by a mile.

We cannot get nough of it, play everyday and we're ISS Pro-PES veterans....I love this game...
