France was better. They got their goal and then defended and played the counter attack the rest of the game. Barthez almost screwed up the whole thing for them with that attempt to save Ronaldo's shot. Zidane deserves this WC, I hope he gets it (Y). I felt bad for Figo and a couple of other Portuguese players but I really don't care about most because they dive way to much.

I agree, all the English pundits thought that it was a penalty, but I thought it was minimal contact :(

It was obvious that if France scored first the game would be over. Their defence and midfield is too solid for and we don't have decent strikers. Our strikers throw themselves at the ground when they see the ball pass. Can't win the game that way. Pauleta and Postiga are ridiculous.

True. France didn't creat much danger either. We were just uneffective. But that Figo miss on the free kick is just :|

I have the feeling Italy will take this. At least they're playing better IMO.

I have to say in my opinion it was a penalty although Henry made a meal out of it.

Carvalho was falling down and had no intention of touching Henry. Henry saw it and provoked the contact.

Still a penalty by the book.

Tough luck Portugal. I saw this one coming tho, ask Rui. France is a more complete team and they deserve to get there. Portugal needs a striker, and a playmaker a la Figo but younger.

By the way, that was definitely a penalty.

You and me both mate, last 20 mins, need an equaliser and bring on an AM for a striker, I know Scolari brought on Postiga towards the end but it was baffling, and he is meant to be a tactical mastermind... (:/)

I didn't understand one thing though. Why did Scolari take out his lone striker Pauleta to bring in another offensive midfielder? He already had Ronaldo, Figo and Deco out there how was Simao gonna help them? Why not take out Figo or Ronaldo and bring in Nuno Gomes?

As Portugal was making that puzzling sub, Domenech took out a midfielder in Malouda and brought in another forward in Wiltord. WTF was Scolari thinking?

Even tho playing with Pauleta was like playing one man down. The guy was useless the entire World Cup and he would be my last bet on anyone to score for Portugal.

Exactly. How do some people even think he's a great coach tactically?..

And really, Postiga is one of the worst portuguese strikers. Why even bring him to the WC just beats me.

Portugese diving was unbeliavable. Miguel makes a pass and falls over himself and Pauleta runs to the referee screaming like crazy asking for a freekick. And then 5 minutes later, falls over just by himself and again screams like he was shot.

I'm just glad there will be no **** like that in the final.

And Ronaldo just took it to the next level with his diving, so much for the talk by Fergie.






Two thumbs up to the ref, he has been very very good, started off slowly falling for portugese diving and called a questionable penalty imo. There was contact, but Henry just stepped on Carvalho's trailing foot. Very debatable, but all around very well done.

This kind of reminds me of 2002 WC, when Brazil barely made it with everyone thinking that Ronaldo was past it and then he came back and won the WC. Now France barely made it and now Zidane comes back and helps them get to the final.

Gonna be great Italy vs. France!!! :bob: :bob:

he tried Ronaldo upfront for 10 min and then he brought Postiga on, who is even more useless than Pauleta.

Nuno Gomes should have started throughout the whole Cup. He's just a much better player in big games with his constant movement although his finishing sucks. Pauleta is good against the Liechtensteins, Luxembourgs and that kind of team. Postiga is just plain terrible.

not a game of high quality, deserved win for France tho, they did what they had to tactically. as for Portugal, they seriously need to find a striker with some skill, their current forward line is complete crap. sad to see Figo's farewell, Zidane stays on tho :).
the penalty looked doubtful only because Henry decided to "act" a bit, making it seem teatrical. otherwise clear penalty.

Pauleta was dumb to ask for a free kick, he wasn't even looking at the play, but Miguel really got injured, he tried to carry on but had to be subbed.

This is my honest assessment of the Portuguese. Lots of nice build up play but absolutely no cutting edge upfront. Even in the group stage Portugal didn't look like scoring many goals. Pauleta must be frustrating as hell for the Portugal fans to watch. He is so easy to defend against. When the ball is played in he never gets across the defender. It says it all when you have to resort to playing Ronaldo as a center forward. However, the French on the other hand do have that cutting edge upfront in Henry. I feel if they stuck to how they played in the first half they could have put the tie to bed well before the closing minutes. They played a dangerous game sitting so deep and no matter how poor Portugal are in front of goal they were always going to get a late chance of some description.

Shame about Scolari sulking, i didn't think the ref had a bad game to be honest.

Overall the second round of the tournament has been a big disappointment. Most teams have played very cautious football. This World Cup was really for the taking but in all honesty no team has stood out. Arguably Argentina but they peeked too early in the group stages.

Anyhow i expect the Italians will win a tightly contested final.

Oh well our great journey has ended. I can´t be mad at the boys, they made a wonderful career in this World Cup. I can´t be mad at Scolari either, sure he made a few mistakes in the tactical setup and the subs but i can´t forget what he helped us achieved in the recent past. Congrats to France. It was a mininal touch by Carvalho but he did touch Henry, so i can´t complain. Of all ppl it had to be Carvalho who was being flawless in the whole WC. Gutted. France did enough i guess, they have a similiar style of play. Portugal would prolly have done the same. We had a couple of chances but we were didn´t have the luck that we had in the previous games. Figo must be devastated for missing that chance. A word to Ronaldo even with all the hooligans booing him, he was our best player without a doubt and he never gave up. Fought like a lion. Great moment in the end when him and Henry hugged. Wonderful moment in the end btw Figo and Zidane also. Thanks for everything Figo, true legend. Our best player since Eusébio.
I don´t really care about the 3rd place match, i don´t know if i´ll watch it. Have no will to watch it. But i´ll watch the final and root for Italy. Forza Azzuri :p
