Wasted talents

Marius Niculae. Ex-Dinamo player though, not really a surprise.

For me a wasted talent would be someone like Milan Baros, and even he seems to be turning it around at Lyon.

I would also go with Anelka, who had all the tools, but no brain. And even he has finally shown some maturity.

Van der Vaart is only 24... he still has a chance to make it big.

Some players blossom later than others.

I mean, when his career's over, if he's done nothing, you say he's a waste, but at 24, there are still a lot of miles left in his career.

Also don't agree about Larsson... as he never wasted an ounce of talent.

I guess it depends on whether you think wasted talent is a guy who had talent but didn't take advantage of it, or a really talented player playing on a shite team.

EDIT: Totally forgot! Biggest waste of talent AND money has got to be our friend Denílson de Oliveira Araújo, now plying his trade in Saudi Arabia

Mauricio Pinilla (currently at Universidad de Chile)

He is still very young but jumped from club to club while he was in Europe.

Big Daddy
Marcelo Salas, in 1998 everyone reckoned he was "the next big thing" a big money move to Juve, and then he faded away.

Matthew Le Tissier, Okay not in terms of fading - but his sublime skill and lethal finishing deserved a much bigger stage. But you gotta admire his loyalty to Southampton.

Pierluigi Casiraghi - A brilliant Euro 96, a move to Chelsea and then practically destroyed by a freak injury. Obviously you can't blame him or anyone else for that matter.

Some who have pi$$ed their own talents or failed to justify the hype;

Christopher Wreh: When he arrived at Arsenal in 1997, people hailed him as a prodigious talent, unfortunately he ended up in the "what happened to?" file.

Eric Djemba-Djemba : When United first played the combative Cameroon international, everyone was positive and even suggested United may have found a player in the Roy Keane mould. Unfortunately in the big games he went missing and was sold to Aston Villa. He failed to make an impression there too and is currently playing for Championship Burnley.

Kleberson: Many people pointed to Kleberson as the lynchpin of the Brazillian national team that secured the World Cup in 2002. Manchester United were expecting a huge impact but the Brazillian was constantly battling for fitness (and suprisingly played out of position when he did play) he was moved on to Besiktas.

Also in the Manchester United "Looked good on paper" file is the "Czech Express Train" Karel Poborsky. Impressive in Euro96, people tipped him to rise alongside the awesome Pavel Nedved as a world star. United bought him in 1996 to play on the right wing - Unfortunately for the golden haired wingman, United were about to produce a goldenhaired midfield maestro of their own - a certain Mr D. Beckham esq. Poborsky couldn't break through and was sold a couple of seasons later to Benfica, and then he returned home to Sparta Praha (also seeing red in a UCL match V United)

And in the same stable of Czech wonders was a certain Patrick Berger (now languishing at Aston Villa) Impressive at first at Liverpool, he faded and was sold to Portsmouth and later Aston Villa.

Mauricio Pinipom isn't a waste of talent, he simply doesn't have talent.

Agree so much, I can't believe how that turned out.

El Diablo Rojo

Fernando Cavenaghi, throwing him to the first random that came by wasn't a good idea.

Martín Fabro, currently in Montreal Impact, why did we throw him away like that? I hope he gets to come back soon.(:/)

yeah, Adriano, Ibrahimovic, Figo, Stankovic, Cordoba, Julio Cesar, Zanetti, Vieira, Materazzi, Grosso, Cambiasso...such waste :(

Last I heard, he was playing in the Ryman League. :funny:

Effin Barcelona have completely f*cked up with Saviola. The guy's only 25 though and I hope that he gets sold to Madrid for his own sake. He's not a has-been yet but will be if he stays at Barca.

Alvaro Recoba. If he didnt suffer from so many injuries, he wouldve won a golden ball, and been considered one of the greatest players of this generation.

Fan Favourite
Walcott could do well with a loan to a championship side. Being barely played doesnt help his development.

Team Captain
Recoba
he's got an amazing talent in attack, along the lines of ronaldinho/riquelme
plagued by injuries
amazing left foot and free kick specialist as well

Trequartista

Youth Team
Recoba no doubt. One of the my favorite players to watch, but I never get to. Michael Owen's heading that way too with all these injuries.
