Want US$20,000 for an essay?

No, this is not spam ;) . Since there are a few people here that like to write, I thought you might be interested in this. Shell (yes, the oil company) and The Economist magazine run a competition each year, which involves a 1700 word essay on a particular theme. This year it is the question 'Do we need nature'. First prize is US$20,000, and the total prize pool is US$65,000. The best part is, they are not looking for 'academic' style essays. So go to http://www.shelleconomistprize.com/index2.html if you are interested, check out the terms and conditions to see if you are eligible, and get writing ;) .

Ah jeesh. I might have considered it if it would have been at least 20,001 UNITED STATES DOLLARS but because it's not--I think I'm going to have to pass. What a shame.

hopefully this is for real, i entered some poestry contest that was giving out 20 g's also, and i keep getting letters that say: "you're a finalist so come receive your trophy for the 200x poet of the year award finalist crap, just come to our convention which costs $1000 to attend and buy all these books where your poem is published...bla bla bla".

One poem and i'm nominated for best poet 3 straight years.
*cough* rip-off *cough*

Don't worry, this is most definitely for real. I have heard of that poetry scam as well.

I entered the Shell/Economist competition last year, the theme was 'How much freedom should we give up for our security' or something. Unfortunately, I pitched my essay too high, so will be looking to tone down the academic jargon this year.

Lost in a reformat...:( but basically it was an attempt to come up with a 'manifesto of responsibility', where we are individually and collectively (as in governmental, corporate etc.) ethically responsible for the plight of the 'other'. I argued that our 'freedom' (as individuals, or societies) can only exist to the extent that it is confirmed by the other (as in an 'other' individual, or an 'other' society), because our existence necessarily occurs through taking up space (whether physically or imbalnced trade policy etc.) that could be occupied by an other. Hence, our security is dependent on how we make use of that space... and the manifesto I laid out was based on how to make use of that space in an ethically responsible way.

i would have to write 1700 words? outrageous...

I can do it in one:

No

But, if you want it in 1700, here we go:

The recent question has been raised of whether we actually need nature, or 'the enviornment', or whether we should destroy it, creating a haven for humans to live in, with many cities sprawling over the freshly cut landscape.

My answer to this very obsultue yet challenging question would be in the negative sector.

Might have a go, if I find the time. I'm already boiling a couple of ideas, nothing too fancy, just a different way to tell a point of view. ;)
