USA v. Japan [R&B]

2-0 US in the first half, and it could have been worse for Japan. Complete domination, although Japan seemed to finally get a grip in the last 10 minutes of the half.

Great game so far for Dempsey and Twellman. Eddie Pope is the best finisher on the team, seriously.

I think McBride will catch him by years end.
Bake is retiring from international football after the World Cup. We only have a couple of friendlies where we can use our Europe-based players. If we don't make it out of the group stages, I don't think he can do it.

Do you guys think that it would be a mistake to mess with our current line-up the last two games we have played like world beaters, with Beasley, Reyna, and Johnson not playing we have looked very good, I'm not saying that we don't need those guys but I have always felt that you don't mess with a winning streak.

I think the current lineup needs changing in bigger games because of the fact that the competition we faced was poor. Japan is ok and norway played it's B team.

Just a question, I have never seen us play this good and score this many goals against international teams. But I really think that we need to get our top players together and see what type of team we have. I'm more concerned with how the team plays than the big names being on the team

3-2 FT USA win. Twellman becomes the game winning goal scorer and man of the match. I think he is making a serious case for the WC even if he isin't better than McBride:fool:

After we started subbing players it all went downhill. Johnson and Ching were nowhere near as effective as Wolff and Twellman. Still a good performance overall, I think even at 3-2 the scoreline is flattering for Japan, they had some good long-range shots but they only created two clear-cut scoring chances (and put them both away).

Ratings:

Hartman - 7 (can't really blame him for the goals, made a couple of good saves)

Dunivant - 8 (solid distribution out of the back)
Pope - 8 (great goal, solid defense)
Conrad - 7.5 (made some very good tackles)
Klein - 4 (out of position, struggled all night)

Zavagnin - 6.5 (usual d-mid performance)
Noonan - 8.5 (his best game for the US yet, so smooth on the ball and surprisingly tough on defense)
Dempsey - 8.5 (fouled nearly 10 times, drew two yellow cards, scored goal)
Donovan - 7 (quality of corner kicks varied, good job as a playmaker)

Wolff - 7 (yet another good no-goal game by Wolff)
Twellman - 8.5 (involved in all three goals, he could have scored more but I think that's enough - MOTM)

Johnson - 5.5 (hopefully he can get back into the rhythm in time for the World Cup)
Ching - 4.5 (how is he in front of Rolfe on the forward depth chart?)
Olsen - 7 (some timely challenges and interceptions)

good game... I actually really enjoy watching the US play, I find it an entertaining football. It's technical, yet still direct, without all the unecessary bullsh!t you see from south american teams and some euro. I can see the US causing a couple more surprises again at the WC...

Very impressed by thier play last night. If we hadn't made so many changes it could have been 5-1 or 5-0. We pretty much dominated them from minute 6 to the 75th minute. I know this was the Japan B team but this was also our B team. I feel that with some of our European based players taking over for the less than impressive players we saw tonight we will be on par with the present form Czech team and should be able to grind out a win against Ghana. However, with Italy we would have to hope no matter what that they don't play with thier best form against us because then we have no chance in hell. So I was pretty impressed by our team and can't wait to watch the rest of our games leading up to the world cup because this one was very exciting.

One thing I didn't like was at half time when they pretty much had a 5 minute interview with Twellman stating how he wished he could have been a baseball player and how much he loves that sport. This underlines one of America's greatest soccer weaknesses. Our teenagers aren't able to get into the sport because there is never any good soccer on tv and we never talk about it here. Then our freaking pro players only play because thier good at it and not because they have a great passion for it.

PS. Which players from Japan's A team didn't they bring?
