The guy from "The Herd" in ESPN made a good point when talking about the growing popularity in "Soccer". There is a growing problem and concern with Parents not wanting their son to play Football, because of the concussion problem. Then you have baseball who's popularity is diminishing and in this age where teens want to be more active rather than sit around and not wait around until hitting the big leagues, "Soccer" is becoming more attractive to them. Add to that the ability to earn a scholarship, and more and more parents will push their kids to take up the sport. It may not happen quickly, but give it time, We may end up producing talent that will be able to compete in the highest level.

Out of all the less traditional footballing nations I agree America is the closest to challenging (including vs Africans and Asians here) but I still think the MLS needs to significantly improve for that to happen

Sure, but with it they are physically unable to compete and be glamorous enough for the audience to get them massive TV deals like the EPL

Salary cap isn't stopping that, the US interest in football is

Soccer is now the favorite sport of more kids ages 12-17 than baseball, the "national past time". You don't live here, don't just make assumptions. Everyone I know is watching every game of the world cup, and these are people who don't follow the sport. The popularity is rising and the MLS is getting better; career MLS players like Beckerman can now do well at this stage.

With that said, we're getting depth, but the top level of players is still about the same as it's been in the last 15 years, so who knows. I guess it all could be different if Subotic and Rossi picked the US, but that's just what I see.

Football has been the number one youth sport in Australia for years. Doesn't mean it's the number 1 professional sport. Those serious about sport generally take up a sport that is big professionally. You get professional footballers, but loads more of other codes, even though at youth level it's the opposite

Noone wants to watch a crappy competition though, the viewers demand drives up the price

At the moment there's probably more competition for Bundesliga and La liga rights than the MLS rights in America I'd assume which is because of the quality and increasing interest

You're actually using the rankings to prove a point? Are you serious?

The same rankings that have the newly eliminated Spain at 1, the team that barely got into the World Cup Portugal at 4, England at 10 and the boring ass Greeks at 12?

The rankings are a complete joke.

FIFA rankings (H).

i'm not saying the rankings aren't a joke, i'm simply implying that FIFA watches more and is much more aware of all teams then any one of us are.

whether or not the rankings are 100% accurate, they must have some form of justification to those rankings.

You think teams that didn't make it out of the groups this year, like Juve, Benfica, Napoli, Ajax, Shakhtar, Sociedad, CSKA Moskow and Marseille aren't better than most mls clubs? Or are you referring to teams that play in the pre-group preliminary stages?

i am talking about the pre groups and teams from countries with weaker leagues then your top 4, we all know that when the cl ends it's winner will almost always be a club from the top 4 leagues.

outside of the top 4 i don't really see any of those leagues teams being much better or better at all then mls teams.

for example, swiss, russian, greek, ukrainian, belgian, etc league teams are not that good.

You must not understand how the rankings work. FIFA "watching" has nothing to do with the rankings.

The rankings are based on points given after matches. The point weighing system is based on other calculations like past performance. There is no judgment call or "watching", it's all done through math calculations.

The US has bloated stats because for most of its international matches its opponents are teams like Honduras and Trinidad rather than the top European and South American sides.

Australia has a population of 20 million.

LOL, holy shit bro. You actually thought a panel of the greatest experts in football is convened every year by FIFA to vote on an objective ranking of teams.

If that was the actual protocol the rankings would be even worse. Imagine the corruption that would take place.

Honduras is a tough team, unlike teams that England gets to play.

Come on, there's no comparison between competition in Europe and in the CONACAF. Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica and US are no Spain, Germany, Italy and France? Portugal? Netherlands?
