U.S., Poland meet for second time in '04

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- Manchester United goalkeeper Tim Howard was among 18 players selected Wednesday for the U.S. roster for a July 11 exhibition game against Poland at Soldier Field.
Three other European-based players were selected for the game, the last for the U.S. team before the start of the semifinal round of World Cup qualifying: forward Brian McBride and defender Carlos Bocanegra of England's Fulham and defender Steve Cherundolo of Germany's Hannover 96.

Midfielders DaMarcus Beasley and Chris Armas were picked from the Chicago Fire, who play New England as part of the doubleheader July 11. San Jose's Landon Donovan also was selected.

The United States won 1-0 in an exhibition game at Poland on March 31. The Americans open the semifinals of World Cup qualifying at Jamaica on Aug. 18 - four days after the start of the Premier League season in England, which should make it a busy travel week for several American players.

The full roster:

Goalkeepers: Tim Howard (Manchester United, England), Zach Thornton

Defenders: Chris Albright (Los Angeles), Carlos Bocanegra (Fulham, England, Steve Cherundolo (Hannover, Germany), Cory Gibbs (Dallas), Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado), Eddie Pope (MetroStars)

Midfielders: Chris Armas (Chicago), DaMarcus Beasley (Chicago), Bobby Convey (D.C. United), Landon Donovan (San Jose), Eddie Gaven (MetroStars), Brian Mullan (San Jose), Kerry Zavagnin (Kansas City)

Forwards: Brian Ching (San Jose), Brian McBride (Fulham, England), Josh Wolff (Kansas City)

Yeah, I'm not too sure about that one either.

See how every player has a team in parentheses after their name and Big Zach, um, DOESN'T. Yeah, that might be a problem.

I think Benfica made a mistake by releasing Zack Thornton, I've watched Thornton for years and he would have been a good player to keep on our roster.

Didnt he play for Chicage Fire a while ago?
Yeah... I don't think we want him back though. We have a very good starting goalkeeper in Henry "Lord of the" Ring and we probably pay him around $30,000 a year while Big Zach wouldn't sign for anything less than $100,000. We need the cap space for other players.

Where is John O'Brien (Ajax) ?
I can only assume that he's injured, there is no other plausible explanation as to why we haven't seen him with the national team this summer.

Howard, I am interested to see how howard will perform the national team. If u guys had to choose today, who would u pick to be the starting goalie for the World Cup.

Being that Howard was just named keeper of the year in the EPL, I'd say he'd be the first choice.

It would be a toss up between Friedel and Howard....

Keller is a great goalie, but out of the three, he is the worst. Goes to show you how much talent/depth the Americans have at GK.
