What a great game, an epic struggle. The right team went through thankfully, in the lottery that is penalty shootouts. Schwarzer the hero.

And to those Aussies bagging Uruguay after the loss, pull your head in. They did well to hang in there even though they were on the ropes, we couldnt knock em out, but all credit to them. They gave us a good game. BTW, how are the fans taking the loss over there?

The only sad thing was seeing Les Murray at the end of the broadcast going "This one's for you Johnny", looking at the heavens. I remember seeing Johnny in the WC '97 qualifier against Iran, and he was heartbroken, like we all were. So sad he didnt get to see last night's game.

It was great to see many players still around from the '97 qualifier - Aloisi (he's still pretty young though at 29), Tony Vidmar, Kewell (still young 27), Viduka, Popovic. And they got to their dream.

Bring on Germany 06!

This game was really great ... and I think the most important players in Australia's team were, in this match, Bresciano and the Australian goalkeeper ... a very good goalkeeper especially at the penalty shootout ... it's amasing how he saved the 3 penalties. I hope Australia will play at WC 2006 as good as they played in this game ... or better :D

Oh no... watch out everyone, the south americans are ganging up on us. Watch out... they will overcome us with their strict anti drug policy and mega low inflation. :ewan:
Coming from someone who supposedly said he didn't have anything against S. Am. and that only disliked Uruguay because they were the ones who are dirty, that's quite a generalization...

as for why I'm replying on this, yeah, I felt offended. What does it have to do with football, or what does it have to do with Australia going to the World Cup? damn, go to streets, get drunk, whatever... no need to offend anyone, or any country. I understand how it must feel, qualifying to the WC after such a long time, and I understand many australians have never seen them on a World Cup... but I still don't understand all this bashing...

guys this is hopeless.

i mean yes they were spitting at us four yrs ago. but that is in the past. if they act like big idiots over at uruguay and at the centenario by spitting and acting like fools and cursing at us why the fk should we do it in return?

havent you aussies heard of 2 wrongs dont make it right? yesterday i was very proud to be an aussie but after the match reading all the posts that have offended uruguay and south americans i feel very ashamed to be an aussie.

so to all of those people bagging uruguay please stop because you have just ruined a great result and rather making it one that people all over sg would want to forget.

on before the match though. i must say uruguays preparation is what let them down. i mean if you think about it australia had to fly further than uruguay in thats week. but australia took a chather flight that had massage tables the lot. uruguay took economy class. i mean come one how do u expect a team to perform if u dont get them ready with the necessary things. that is the number 1 reason why uruguay were outclassed.

australias preparation was world class and they deserve to be in germany. uruguay i have a soft spot for u (only coz of zalagol and juve) and to all uruguayans on sg keep your heads up and thanku for the most unbelieveable tie i have ever seen in my life.

lol you cannot deny what JTNY is saying though.
I never denied that.... yeah, there are drug problems, yeah, inflation is sky high... what does this have to do with Australia going to World Cup though? a cheap shot, totally uncalled for, much like what the turkish coach did to the Swiss player...
some people said they'd prefer Uruguay at the world cup, so what? can't I prefer say Slovakia to Spain? or Norway to the Czechs?
Every country has problems, and it is no different for Australia...
if a high inflation and drug problems were something bad to football quality, Brazil wouldn't be a favorite to win the World Cup... and Switzerland wouldn't need playoffs...

Good post man.
In Uruguay no one really cared about anything but making the WC (not even beating Australia). But many Aussies took 4 years ago so damn personal (As if they thought that they'd actually tie in Centenario in 2001).

This time too. In the PKs im sure the Aussies were like "Omg....we have a shot at beating Uruguay" while the Uruguayan players were like "Omg....this might be our shot to be in the WC".

Im proud of our guys for many reasons.
1)The plane thing is obvious (had 5 players play 120 minutes with muscle cramps <after we ran out of substitutions <Montero was one of them>)
2) We played the whole 90 mins with exhausted players and pure heart with 85,000 ppl against us. They even got 30 extra minutes to try to beat us but in the end we never lost and the series ended 1-1 on aggregate. I knew we wouldnt lose on AGG too (while there was air in their lungs they wouldnt let themselves be beaten by Australia)
3) Then the coin toss happened (PKs with the whole crowd going nuts) and that was that.
As Uruguay promised, they didnt let themselves be beaten on Aggregate (no matter if they had the best coach)

4) It's fun in a way that this is the new "mini" England vs. Argentina. The next times the teams meet will be at a WC (where the real stakes will be held).

But rubbing it in a win on PKs after not having enough class to score against a dead Uruguay (without Forlan/Cheva/Bueno/cebolla/Olivera <all irreplacable starters> in 120 minutes in front of 85,000 ppl........and then barely win in PKs.

I mean celebrating is cool. But rubbing it in? It's almost pathetic. Atleast we won 3-1 last time...but you still couldnt beat us with all those advantages (and until we play at a wc...you'll never get that chance again).

Congrats....but the rubbing it in is so rediculous and making Australia's win seem like a joke now (Kind of like when Portugal beat England in PKs At home after England played with the most courage in history. In the end everyone went insane when Greece won because Portugal became so hated).

EDIT- and no spitting? On big soccer a few Aussies were wearing LAZIO jerseys and got spat at the back of their heads durign the game in Sydney cause they thought they were Uruguayans.

But we dont whine about those things and take "defeat" (even if by coin toss PKs) like men.
