UEFA rejects Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium

Panathinaikos FC must find a new home ground for future UEFA Champions League matches after UEFA confirmed to the club today that their Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium in Athens was not up to standard.

Decision by 5 December
The Greek champions are permitted to play their third and final Champions League group stage match at the ground but must find another stadium for any subsequent matches in the competition. They play PSV Eindhoven on 7 December in Athens and must notify UEFA by 5 December of their choice of an alternative venue should they progress. Panathinaikos are presently third in Group E.

Alternative
One obvious alternative is the city's Olympic Stadium, which is where AEK Athens FC are playing their home matches at present. On the evidence of the first two group stage matches, UEFA found that many facilities in the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium no longer met the high requirements demanded for the Champions League.

Home of 80 years
Panathinaikos, who have been considering building a new stadium for some time now, have played at the Apostolis Nikolaidis stadium since 1924. For a 16-year period, between 1984 and 2000, they moved to the Olympic Stadium until it was closed for rebuilding ahead of this summer's Games.

That stadium has a helluva atmosphere, i was there last year for the rangers game, the words hostile and crazy spring to mind.

it's a stadium that is used by panathinaikos only becasue the greek goverment doesnt give panathinaikos a place to build a new stadium. Panathinaikos stoped using this stadium in 1984, but since the OAKA was closed for improvements ahead of the olympics in 2000 (or 2001), they had to find a new home, and they went back to their old stadium. The goverment and UEFA want pana to go back and play in the OAKA stadium. (UEFA only becasue they believe that they should play in the best possible stadium). But panathinaikos now will start looking for a new stadium to play in european competitions even outside of greece. But thats only becasue they want to push the goverment to finaly give them a place to build their new home. So before u all start the "looks like crap" etc stuff, make sure u know whats realy going on. They had/have to play there because the goverment refuses to give the most imprtant team in athens, a place to build their new stadium in athens for many years now.

yeah, it's one of the plans, but this staduim is exactly in the center of athens. The idea is to leave this place and give it to build a park that is needed there in athens

yeah athens has no green space whatsoever, and the problem with building something new in athens is that where ever you dig you're sure to find artifacts of some sort which creates huge delays in the building proccess just look at how long it took them to build the subways every few feet they would find acient stuff. I really don't understand why the don't use oaka or buil something where the other major olympic complex was near glyfada, the majority of those stadiums were temporary anyways.

you cannot just tear the place down and rebuild as there is no space to build a new stadium, unless of coarse you plan on building a new facility a mile underground.

im going to miss the place, lots of historic matches and memories from there. i personally hope we get space at goudi and build an impressive home there.
