UEFA CUP QF 2nd leg: Newcastle United v's PSV [P&R]

The result is undoubtably excellent for the club. But it was a pretty frustrating performance once again.

We played very well in the 1st half i thought and reduced PSV to very little, whilst scoring and creating good chances at the other end.

But the second half was sloppy  some players just seemed to switch off. In particular Speed, Jenas and Ambrose i felt. As they play in midfield they can't really afford to switch off. PSV were getting all the possession... I though Speed was very poor last night. Made some schollboy mistakes in his passing and judgement of play... but i suppose he made up for that later on.

And the goal was coming i was just hoping it wouldnt. The penalty wasn't all Bernard's fault. Ambrose had a part to play aswell in the affairs letting Lee cross the ball.
Couldnt argue much about the pen though.

There was almost a case for another one .... except it was just outside the area ... and Van Bommel making a meal of it probably put the ref off giving them a FK.

But we managed to score while we were still playing badly. After that we held on. Another classy performance by Woodgate. And a good on by Bramble made things easier at the back for us, and kept Kezman out of things.

Overall it was a good European tie.

all in all there's a quote on the BBC web that sums it up well
"we can defenitly win the UEFA Cup, it all depends on which Newcastle turns up."

Starting XI
I haven't been this excited about a cup competition since we got to the 98 FA cup final.

We played so well in the first half and stopped PSV playing. We really should have capitalised on our chances. In the 2nd i thought we were wondering into a false sence of security. I could see PSV were going to get a goal which they did. The important thing was the reaction afterwards and in our case it happened with a trade mark Robert cross followed by a trade mark Speed header.

Marseille are no pushovers and i think it's going to come down to a single goal again.

Excellent stuff, C'mon you Toon
