UEFA Champions League Final - AC Milan vs. Liverpool FC

monkee

Senior Squad
Yer know, fair play to Liverpool, 3-0 down at half time and being played off the park then the get back to 3-3 after outplaying Milan for 15mins and then revert to being outplayed for the remaining time. They had a very good chance of beating Milan in normal time, having scored 3 goals against a team that had hardly conceded up until that point, but they set out their stall for pens which kinda disappointed me - but not as much as Liverpool winning disappointed me ;). I'm not even going to go into some of my other points on the game.

Suffice to say I feel that champions of any competition should have the right to defend their title. The thing with the CL is that defending the title starts before you are the champions, by qualifying for next seasons competition. I feel, unlike many other people, that qualifying for a competition is part of the competition itself, it's just an earlier round.

In my opinion there are enough poor teams in the CL already without UEFA saying that we'll let a 5th team from any league in. I feel allowing the top 4 teams from the major leagues to qualify is devaluing the competition's aura slightly already without extending it further in any circumstance... The top 2 would be enough (even if it is at the expense of United)... Therefore it's up to regional FA's to put forward their teams and not up to UEFA to extend the limit.

Now, had the FA decided that 'the top 4 teams would be entered into the CL unless the CL champions finish outside of the top 4 in which case the CL champions plus the top 3 clubs will be put forward for entry into next years competition' before competition comenced it wouldn't be a problem. However, it would be unfair to tell any team that has qualified by the rules as stated at the start of play 2004/2005 that they are going to lose their place because of an administrative oversight. So I say tough to Liverpool. They weren't good enough to finish in the top 4 of the EPL, they aren't good enough for next season CL for the reasons stated at the end of Infesta's previous post.

Unfortunately I feel that UEFA, as a result of discussions at their summit, are likely to pressure the FA into including Liverpool at the expense of Everton, who qualified fair and square. I cannot see any circumstance in which UEFA would increase the numbers of entrants into next seasons CL as it would be difficult to accommodate 1 extra team.
