UEFA Champions League 2009-2010

I really like the Fiorentina squad. They have very nice attacking players, I'm impressed they've built on previous squads. Great job from the coach.

Prandelli has been doing fine work in Firenze for nigh on half a decade now ... and yeah, they've got some good attacking talent, and in goal they have a stalwart who is second only to Buffon -- that's right, I really do think Sébastien Frey is that good ...

last season's disappointment in the Champions League needed to be addressed ... so far, it has been a pretty good showing by the Viola ...

Yes Frey is great I agree, I actually wanted him back at inter instead of Cesar when he first came... but he's proven to be really great for Inter.

Unirea Urziceni still on the 2nd place. And what a goal by Onofras :o. Maybe goal of the night in UCL?

2 matches remaining and Urziceni is close to make history.

btw, Mutu just scored his 3rd goal in last 2 matches in CL.

Those are the best group stages in last years...

YES, I would love to see all Italian teams qualify. Especially, if Fiorentina can knock out Liverpool. Prandelli has been doing excellent work in Firenze. I can't wait for Lippi to move on because I would like to see Prandelli or Spalletti take over the national squad. With the young talent that Italy has, either of these two manages could transform they way Italy plays and change the perspective on what Italian football is and could be.

Rocky (the Juve supporter from this forum) and I had a conversation a while back about how Lippi should go, and who should replace him ... suffice it to say, both names came up (amongst many others -- Gasperini, etc.) ...

people who believe that the current Italian philosophy of football is just about defending are simply not watching the Serie A ... a lot of the current Italian managers have an attacking formation as their preference ...

there is plenty quality at the U21 level (and amongst the recent U21 graduates) ... I'm sure you'd want to see Andrea Ranocchia get called up, the way he's played for you guys this season ... he's only on loan at Bari, and Genoa would be foolish to sell him outright, but you can enjoy him this season as he helps keep Bari in Serie A ...

there's plenty more talent amongst the more seasoned players who should have been called up a lot more ... don't get me started on Cassano ... I would be ecstatic if I'm wrong, but Fantantonio is not going to be named in Lippi's "experimental squad" for the friendlies coming up ... let's see who he does name ...

My eye was on the Lyon- Fiorentina match... and Am I glad to see Liverpool out of the CL, It couldn't have happened to a better team.

And Inter... I hope they get knocked out, I wasn't expecting them to beat Barca, but I was expecting them to go out and play. So much for that.

Hold on... They can still qualify. Provided:

1. Lyon lose to Debrecen AND
2. Liverpool win against Fiorentina.

Although thats a highly unlikely (H) considering Liverpool has to increase their GD from -1 to 5 (provided Lyon lose 1-0 to Debrecen)

One scenario could be: Liverpool winning 4-0 and Lyon losing 3-0 to Debrecen which sends Liverpool through... But that would have been a miracle if it happened. I expect Lyon to beat Debrecen and go through.

But no. Not even on paper.

They are eliminated. Even if Lyon loses 100:0 and Liverpool wins 100:0. Lyon has the advantage from the direct matches (1 win, 1 draw).

Yeah. My bad then. Always a joy to see Liverpool out anyhow :innocent_smile_1:

great to see fiorentina through ... and doubly so because it was an italian club going through at the expense of an english one ...

This is one of the most interesting UEFA Champions League edtion from last years I think. We've got one of the biggest surprises... Unirea Urziceni needs a draw in Stuttgart to qualify in 1/8. It's awesome that a team coming from a 18.000 people city, playing on other team's stadium managed to have 20.000 spectators last night. This is just incredible! They play such a great football. They beat Rangers 4-1, made a draw with them 1-1, another draw with Suttgart and now they beat Sevilla. Also I'd want to speak about one of the most talented players... DIEGO PEROTTI. The guy is just amazing... His technique is incredible. I think he's gonna be a very good player.

On the other hand we have an edition without Liverpool in 1/8 and another great team there, Fiorentina. After watching the Barça - Inter double I completely changed my opinion about Inter... I recognize I haven't watched so many Inter games in the last 2 years, and I thought they play football, but they don't do that. Very dirty team. I can't imagine how a team with these players doesn't play an attacking football. Diego Milito, Eto'o, Quaresma, Mancini, Stankovic, Cambiasso. Just read their names...

I'd have liked Rubin Kazan more in the 1/8 than Inter, though they also didn't play attacking football against us too, but they can be excused, not having iNter'splayers and name...

Unirea Urziceni - Barça in 1/8 please! :D

I was disappointed by their performance today.. LIke I said, I didn't expect them to beat Barca, But I was at least expecting them to put up a fight, and they seem not to be bothered with that. I know they will go through, but if they plan on playing like that, then I hope they don't go far.

he's already a very good player, Sevilla wingers are knifes, they got the best player of la liga right now: Jesús Navas.

Something I noticed today...a lot of the teams aren't wearing their sponsors on their shirts for Champions League. I know Liverpool isn't, saw Madrid didn't, and today I saw that Milan isn't either. Anyone know why this is?

both Switzerland and France prohibit the display of alcohol or gambling sponsors on shirts when matches are broadcast ... as I expect you know, Liverpool are sponsored by Carlsberg (alcohol), and both Real and Milan have bwin.com (gambling) as a shirt sponsor ... when law prohibits the display of their shirt sponsors, they wear sponsorless shirts ... this has been the case for a while now ...

also, UEFA's own laws prohibit two teams from sporting the same sponsor when they play each other ... so when Milan faced Real Madrid over two matches, the home team wore "bwin.com" and the away team wore "win.com" ... it has also been seen in previous seasons ... for example, when Arsenal and Hamburg, two "Fly Emirates" sponsored teams, faced off ... the home team had "Fly Emirates" on their shirts, while the away team had "Dubai" ...

Yeap, anyway the 4-1 score was too much! not fair, even thou Juve played like a boot! Felipe Melo doesn't deserve to play for Juventus, they've paid a lot of money for this guy and he is just a middle-table team player.
