U.S. vs. Italy Ref Suspended for "Irregularities" in 2002?

According to ESPN, Jorge Larrionda (Uruguay), the referee for the U.S. vs. Italy game, was suspended for "irregularities" in his performances in 2002. Does anyone have any information on this? If FIFA is putting a sketchy ref in charge of a game involving a nation notorious for crooked referees and match fixing, then a serious investigation needs to follow.

He wasn't so bad. The elbow was obviously a red, Mastroeni's late tackle, was aswell, worthy of a red. Pope's tackle was late - that was a call of judgement, but it didn't seem that notorious of a call. In the second half he let the game just play on, there was a few bad tackles not called, and a few touch fouls called. Nothing major.

I think if Italy bought the referee, they would have obviously gotten a few penalties, or not as many non-excistent off-side calls to get three points. Not just the draw, and leave their futue on the line in the next game. People read too much into stuff.

Some people need to take a fu*king chill pill.

Like skiptomylou said, the De Rossi and Mastroeni red cards were deserved. As for Pope.....hell, if you look at the game thread, SEVERAL members (even Yanks) point out that Pope had been leaning up against a second yellow for a long time.....and then it happened.

he could have easily sent off a few more players really. Some killer tackles went unpunished.

Now that I've cooled down, I can't complain too much about the ref. I'll have to look at the replays again, but I think most of all we have ourselves to blame for those red cards.
