Is soccer trading card collecting a major industry? Or is it a dying hobby?

Football stickers, pokemon cards, Magic cards, Yu-gi-Oh cards. I don't wanna think how much money was wasted on all that shit. Final straw was when got into Warhammer and after buying a bunch of boxes and kits I realised that it was a sad and horrible game and dropped all those collectors' things.
I dunno if it was caused by or the cause of my hoarding personality, but any collection I have now needs to be complete. If I buy a CD (or download a song) I need to get everything in that album, then by that artist. TV dvds, same. I even have a Nolan collection. Starting to do the same with books which is at least more productive but it could cripple me when I become independent.
