Roma star Francesco Totti has hit out at the Ballon d'Or awards after finishing a lowly 18th place in the poll.
The Italian international clearly had designs on the European Footballer of the Year award, but also praised Premiership duo Ruud van Nistelrooy and Thierry Henry.

"I'd have given it to van Nistelrooy," he told Il Mesaggero. "I took it badly.

"As Gennaro Gattuso said, the sponsors have a big weight.

"I haven't been lucky in the world's awards, but I'd put myself in the first three, with van Nistelrooy and Henry."

Totti is even more determined to prove his worth in 2004.

"The European Championship is the most important shop window for me," he added. "More than the Italian league with Roma.

"I'll be stronger there (in Portugal). In Japan, I only played well in the first match.

"After the European Championship, I could leave the Italian national team.

"If I one day I have to leave Roma, I'll never stay in Italy.

"Only abroad. But, if I leave, there is only Real (Madrid), whom I dreamt about as a child.

"But I must win another two or three scudetti with Roma first."

CMON SERIOUSLY WHAT A COCKY GUY LOL HES GOOD BUT HE DIDNT DESERVE TO BE IN THE TOP 3.

I don't mind his comments because they are after all his own opinion. He did go overboard with some of what he said. However we're going to see if he's able to back up his belief at the EURO2004 Championships.

hmmm only thing i got out of this was that he is going to retire Italian nation team early and he wants to go to Real

Nah i see that he wants to be top 3 as well but he didnt win any cups for his team. I love Totti and all but this time his going a little too much. He should just worry about staying in good from and playing well for Roma rather then worrying about what awards he gets

anyways hopefully this dosnt get to much into his head otherwise his game will drop

I don't feel he went overboard, he didn't set the world on fire this season which is where I'll point out the wrong move. Totti has long since played his greatest games, he hasn't proved much, heck even old Figo has played better than him in recent months. Totti needs to stop(yes I know this is the beginning of the same sentence I say over and over) thinking he's the best and being the god damn best.

-He wants to win two or three italian national leagues...haha!He'll maybe win this year if Juve don't hit spectacular form.He definitely won't be winning it as much as he thinks.
-By saying he should be in top 3 he degrades other players ,especially Nedved who won it.That's really pathetic.
Plus all the other players who finished above his ass on the list.
-Leaving the Italian team next year would be a loss for him.He's young and hasn't done much with Italy.Retiring would be a really bad move.
-Saying that he wants to join another club is always a mistake.He should be happy in Roma.He's their top player and they're top placed in Serie A so he can't say he's playing for a bad side.

Figo hasnt played better than Totti, what planet are you from....Figo isnt anywhere near as good as Totti anymore...hes way passed his best and will soon have to go to portugal to play since hes no longer the best at his position when he came to Madrid....nothing in Figo's game besides doing stepovers is better than Totti's ....its laughable that you think so

well, im a totti fan, but i don't agree with what he said....he has the right to his opinion but, last year wasn't his best..........nedved cleary deserved it for an excellent season, if totti was to win it, it should of been the year he won the scudetto with roma.........and he's not sayin he wants to leave roma, its just a dream to play for real, a lot of players have these dreams, gattuso dreams of playing for boca, that doesnt mean hes leaving milan.
