The top 5 things I hate about PES4
5 – The appalling automatic player selection, especially when you defend, giving you control of players that are either too far to be useful – compared to other defenders – or not positioned between the opposite player and the goal. Added to the infamous advantage of the CPU tackling vs. the player, that makes defending a pure pain. I know I can press a special key, but that does not excuse a poor programming.
4 – The ‘I need to press buttons ten times before something happens’ that makes you miss strikes, passes and all the rest.
3 – The computer’s super moment once you’ve scored. The top bit being the multiplication of the infamous ‘push’ tactic where the computer simply pushes your player and makes him fall. Not only does it almost never result in a fault, but never in a card. Talking about card, what about the absence of straight red? Especially when the last defender catches and fouls the player that’s flying to the goal.
2 – The keeper unbeatable form, whoever strikes, always. Particularly fustrating when you spend some time building up for a one on one and always find your striker hiting the keeper. Always. Or kicking above the bar, thanks to the ridiculous the more you press the higher the ball system. The longer you press, the more successful your strike is a great system since it allows you to choose the degree of risk you take. Why replacing it by a system that has no advantages?
1 – The uselessness of the players’ statistics that translates into a top striker being caught back by a second class defender, even though the striker started his run ahead. And I’m talking edge of the box, I am talking a striker having a couple of meters advantage, not running the whole pitch up and down with the ball. Give a slight advantage to Henry or Ronaldo on the edge of the box and no one should catch them back. Give them the ball there and they should be able to accelerate enough to be in a scoring position 9 times out of 10. No never like in the current game. The stat **** works the over way around too: it is almost impossible to miss a cross, even full speed, tackled and pushed, while crossed are exactly the kind of stuff which most prof. players can still **** up easily. Whichever crap player wings up to the box always crosses perfectly. Just dumb.
I’ve not listed the free kick, I should have. It’s ridiculous not to be able to measure the direction, strength and style of kicks a bit better. I hear people say in real life you don’t have help but in real life, you feel the ball you see your team mates better, you have habits and styles of kicking, you see players starting runs…
Oh, and the Konami ball, incredibly ugly. I should think about trying to remove it…
Also, the rebirth of great players with top stats pisses me off. Nurturing youth? And that makes the impossibility to import modified players in the ML the more stupid. If you can get Maradona for free, why can’t you create a top player yourself?
None of these elements are bad in themselves. What makes then really annoying is that they happen constantly, repeatedly, time and time again within one single game. A great keeper is fine, even better if it’s linked to skills, but in the current system even the worst keeper will block Henry on one on one every single time, while the same Henry will never outrun the same lame keeper. That is ridiculous.
The burst of ‘energy’ of the computer once you’ve scored is fine as well, but why does it have to happen every single game? You pretty much know once you’ve scored that the CPU will tackle better, shoot better, cross better, run faster and spoil everything. Or that it will be more likely to score within the last minute. Once again that’s Ok, teams have ups and downs even within one match, but all the time… Some players should dramatically outperform or underperform sometimes. That’d be nice too. But this ‘everybody is top class now’ because you score is just lame. For the guys who pretend PES is so real, look a freekin’ game of soccer on TV and you’ll realize that it’s actually slower most of the time than your beloved game, that its not always played at high speeds and that it barely never has all these special moves that you learn by heart to impress colleagues.
The push your player and make him fall back is fun once or twice but gets just boring when constant and is never sanctioned by the referee. It’s the dumbest stuff to do since you get caught easily.
I hate the FIFA series but I have to admit that I am really disappointed by the Konami game. Pissed off that for the price you pay they’re not able to redesign the interface for PC (I mean, come on, you have a keyboard and you’re not able to type in the name of a player, you have to use the crappy console system. How lame…) I also thought, reading the forum and others comments that game play was great with PES. It’s just as bad as the FIFA I remember. I’ll have to play with FIFA 05, but I want to tell all of the PES crazy dudes out there that they should stop worshiping blindly a game that has so many obvious problems and a gameplay that is just plain average. Don’t get me wrong, I like a challenge, but playing in a league where 95% of the games end up in draws or 1-0 is just plain boring. Bracing when you’ve scored because you know the computer will attack twice as better is just stupid. And the uselessness of stats makes the whole buying-selling players stage useless.
I also don’t really understand the difficulty levels: 1 and 2 are way too easy. 3 gets into the hard league (mostly because the comp. cheats; it does not play better) and then from there, there’s a sort of plateau and it’s all about the same. 3, 4 or 5 don’t make any difference. I have not try 6 yet but I can clearly imagine that it’s only going to raise my frustration with the ridiculous AI programming and not add any specific game play enhancement.
But it’s me. I don’t care if players move beautifully, if the graphs are top or if I can score doing the most incredible series of moves by pressing all the buttons at once like if I was playing Mortal Combat. All I want is playability and I am sorry to say that despite what all the geeks on this forum say, PES proves no better than FIFA. A game where you have to constantly use all the ‘special moves’ to win is just another FIFA. Special moves should be the exception, not the rule.
I have to admit that I bought the game on the back of comments made on that type of forums. I’ve been ****ed up. You guys should at least have the decency to admit the game’s flaw (rather that always pretending it’s a training question), especially considering how prompt you are to criticize FIFA games.
