My bad. I kept thinking this is a "your top 10 players ever" kind of topic.

Never mind, my mistake.

it is a "your" top players ever thread, which doesn't mean you have to actually see them play live in order to put them on your list..

Puskas needs to be in there, Zidane shouldn't be anywhere near that high. Neither should Ronaldo.
Maybe not Ronaldo, but Zidane definately could. He is one of the greatest players of all time, and the fact that he has dominated world football for so long despite the fact that he played during the time when the overall competitiveness and standard of play was the highest definately cements him there in my book. I suspect if you were to transfer the Zidane of 5 years ago back to the days of Pele and Beckenbauer he would dominate even them.

agree with you 100% Zidane was doing it when the competition was at its highest.

also he had the consistensy throughout his career he had succes where ever he went. unlike for instance maradona and ronaldo they were both great telents but they wernt that consistent throughout there careers for what ever reasons. Zidane has done it where ever he has played. for me thats a true mark of a great player.

I saw Zidane play badly many many times, having said that he's one of the few big stars who could always raise the bar for the big occasion.

I'm sure the likes of Pele, Maradona and Cruijff played their share bit of crap games aswell. Cruijff for example in the biggest game ever played by the Dutch NT: the world cup final 1974.

Zidane is certainly the greatest player I've ever seen playing live and not from some dusty old video archives from long gone retired players.

Yeah i agree, to be fair, in all honesty Kaka should be up there in a few years, if only for the performance he gave against Man Utd in the semis last year.

The phrase masterclass could never be used in a better match.

Alright well the standing are turning rather surprising but i wont post that, keep voting, I want to try to get as many people as possible here so there is not dissent, or at least little dissent at the end..

Btw a couple points....Yes this is the best player ever thread, it should not be limited only to those you have seen with your very own eyes play but also to those who have left an indelible trail in the game, otherwise Di Stefano, Cruyff, Pele, and maybe even Maradona would be out since a large number of people here never saw them play.

There seems to be a belief here that football back in the day was soft, or easy...nothing further from the truth. Up until the 1966 world cup subs were not allowed, and players often had to keep playing with broken bones, going earlier to the 30's, 40's and even 50's defensive regulations were not as strongly enforced as they are now and some games were literal battles where players would walk out seriously hurt...some games resembled rugby more than football, that being the case, to be a great scorer, or a technically gifted player in those years was an amazing feat, maybe harder than today, as players lacked the coaching, preparation or technology of today, it was as raw as talent can get....

anyway, here are my top players of the 1950's

Ademir-Brazil (One of the best Brazilian CF in history. Never became world famous because he failed to lead Brazil to 1950 title)

Zizihno-Brazil (First true world class Brazilian attacking mid, that is saying a lot. Played most of his career in Brazil)

Zarra-Spain (Holds the La liga record for the most scoring titles to this day. He is also the man who has scored the most goals in Spanish football history.

Raymond Kopa-France (The first true French star. He was also one of the key pieces of the Real Madrid dynasties of the 1950s.)

Fitz Walter-Germany (One of the most beloved heroes of German football. He scored the winning goal in the 1954 world cup and was a key component of the Kaiserlautern side that dominated the Bundesliga in the 1950's)

Ferenc Puskas-Hungary (Arguably the greatest of all time. He among other things led the Magical Magyars of Hungary thru the early 1950's and later the Real madrid side that conquered Europe. He score 84 times in 86 International appearances!)

Alfredo Di Stefano-Argentina/Spain (Pehaps there has been no better "9" in the history of the game. Di Stefano had an unremarkable international career. But playing for Real Madrid he is to this day the third Highest scorer in the history of Spanish Football, and still a top 5 in CL Scoring charts)

Just Fontaine-France (Still hold the record for the most goals in a single world cup. With Stade Ettiene, he holds multiple scoring records in La Ligue 1. One of the most prolific strikers of all time)

Lev Yashiv-USSR (Only GK to ever win the European Footballer of the year award. Known as the Black Spider. He holds every Soviet Superliague record for clean sheets and also a number of European records for saves. It is believed he blocked over 150 penalty kicks in his career.)

can totally agree on this , but did some of you also know that not uptil the 70's when the clockwork orange style of play by holland .... midfielders started to defend .... fullbacks started to attack.... forwards started to do some midfield work.... its funny that seeing some of di stefano or peles videos , positions back then were static, defenders even seem kinda clumsy..... so believe you me if players like pele or eusebio would for some reason make it in modern football.... players like zidane , ronaldo, kaka would tear it up back in the old days..... what i mention before in my posts was mainly aim to this comparisons, their a bit unfair really if you ask me.... specialy for players in modern football....

I think nowadays, conditioning is amazing as is the level of technical and professional preparation that goes into a football player. Their fitness is higher their preparation is too, also there is a lot more parity as more people play the game...But like I said, the raw talent, I guess is something that cannot be negated of these old players....Also even before Clockwork orange and as far back as 1950 Hungary was already playing dynamic positions, with the Magical Magyars..Also, the Real madrid of Kopa, Gento, Puskas and Di Stefano and the Brazil of Pele in 58 and 62, and even the Argentina of 66 were all playing pretty complete, dynamic team play. To say that players were static or lacking dynamism in prior to clockwork orange is not true....But I do agree that those dutch teams of the 70's changed the way the game is viewed tactically forever.

Thing is, it worked against most players back then, but not against geniuses, which is what made them geniuses in the first place.
Also, players like Zidane, Ronaldo, Kaka would grow up playing against static defenses, not developing the sense of movement they must have nowadays. Or they would, and would also be called geniuses. It's tough comparing players from different eras...

But this was not about current players....for the 15th time...this is about best ALL TIME! not just the ones you have watched play....if you really believe Kanoute is the #12 player in the history of the game so be my guess....thought i take it to be rather shortsighted.
