To buy an Apple iPod Mini, or not to buy an Apple iPod Mini.

At the moment I've got money to spend. A pleasent situation to be in I can tell you. I'm doing an internship at a consultancy agency which pays me to talk poo and not work hard.

Last weeks I've been drooling over the iPod Mini and a BOSS ME-50 guitar effects box. I've decided to first have a decent look at the iPod because I'm commuting by train every day, then I will buy the BOSS ME-50 of next month's paycheck (H).

So does anyone have the iPod Mini? Do you reccommend it? I've thought about the capacity, but 4gb is more then enough for my limited musical taste. How about the iTunes thing, how does that work, can you rip CD's with iTunes? How about transferring files from your PC to your iPod. My PC is about 3 years old so it doesn't have a FireWire port, is USB still reasonably fast...

iPod and iPod Mini users fill me in please... thanx.

If I were you I'd get the normal iPod, the iPod mini looks a bit naff. And if you compare prices you may aswell get the normal iPod, works out cheaper.
Yes, you can rip CD's using iTunes, it's very easy to do. You put the CD into your PC, open iTunes (usually it'll even do that for you) and click import and just wait a bit, easy as piss.
USB isn't a fast a Firewire obviously but still fast enough that you won't have to wait for too long.

I'm thinking of getting the normal (15GB) iPod because at the moment I'm carrying my old Phillips discman around with me, what a pain that is.

I have a 15GB iPod and I love it. Can't live without it. With iTunes you can buy songs for 99 cents and it's available in Europe now too, I think. You can't however rip CDs to MP3. You can create playlists and change the options a bit. As for transfering between the PC and iPod, you do need a Firewire. It took me about 5 minutes to put it in, by the way and it works fine for my 2 year old computer (Dell, Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz, bought in Sept. 2002). If you don't want to buy a the whole Firewire-thing, just get a dock connector. Just ask the people at the store what wires you exactly need and how much it costs but I think you need a USB 2.0 cable and Firewire cable in addition to the dock.

The thing I also like about the iPod is that it almost every accesoire you can imagine. Just look at ipod.com. This for example. The thing is awesome.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

I bought an iPod a few weeks ago. Don't buy a mini iPod, the storage is very limited and a regular iPod isn't much more. iPods are awesome though, I would strongly recommend getting one.

Vagegast, you can rip CDs to your computer and put them on your iPod as long as you have a program that can do it. I'm pretty sure most computers already come with programs that can do it and if yours doesn't I would think you could download a program that can do it.

You're right, I was just saying that the iTunes program won't be able to do it. I use MusicMatch, it was installed when I got the PC.

With the iPod come two cables if I'm correct. One FireWire and one USB 2. Perhaps I should just invest in a FireWire card as well, they shouldn't be too expensive.

Too bad you can't rip CD's with iTunes. How about that ID3 file info. I'm really into sorting my music and naming it all properly, but I only rename the file, I hardly ever take time to alter the ID3 tags.

I'm sure the iPod mini is good for me. I like the fact that's fair bit smaller then normal iPod's, and the price differnce is quite significant as well. It also think it looks a bit cooler, espescially the blue one. As for capacity, I just checked my My Music folder. It's total size is 2,7gb. I only listen to music I really like. 4Gb is enough.

I walked into the Bijenkorf (dutch shopping mall) to see if they sold any. The guy goes: "Sorry they're all sold out". So ask him if they're going that well. "No", he says. "Apple has some serious delivery issues to deal with. We only received ONE Apple iPod Mini this week. And we were lucky with that". There were only seven iPod Mini's for all the Bijenkorf malls in the country. :|

So I went home, wanted to buy one off the internet. Last page of the Apple Online store says: Expected delivery within 4 to 6 weeks. :| :f***:

That's just pathetic. Such a good product. Well marketed, luxuary packaging, and then they can't get their delivery **** together, that's insane.

European iPods are capped thanks to the French Government :p

Because they thought if the iPod was too loud it would make people deaf, but you can remove the cap of the decibels.

Maarten: yeah, you van change the ID3 tags with the iTunes program.

And here in America they don't sell the 15GB anymore, so I'll be selling mine on eBay in 10 years and be done for life. (H)

I use iTune to rip CD's so it is possible, I don't know why every says it isn't possible.

Insert the CD, open iTune, you'll see the CD and tracks listed. Select the tracks you want to rip (ie. import onto your HD in mp3 format) and press "import", simple. I do it all the time.

Larry, the free record shop prices are mad! They are a lot cheaper if you buy them from the Apple (NL) store. 10GB (I didn't know there was a 10GB version but anyway...) at FreeRecordShop is 399,99 Euro. At the NL Apple store the 20GB iPod is 329 Euro. Doesn't really make sense.
