The Pope put his slipper in his mouth

Haha, what's the world coming to if the religious leaders cant rag on each other and have to apologise for insulting other religions.

I think we all knew it would only be a matter of time before that nazi bastard Ratzinger put his foot in it - honestly, when the last papal election was taking place, everyone I knew was shouting "anyone but Ratzinger" - and what does the catholic church go and do when they desperately need to show modernisation and liberalisation to survive - elect this horrible man. People dont realise that the only reason Pope John Paul was able to be such a "caring and loving" guy was because he had Ratzinger behind the scenes doing all the dirty work. Him being pope is like Karl Rove being president.

Anyway, I hope this escalates into a huge internation incident resulting in Ratzinger being forced out and negative opinion on the Catholic church to be higher than ever. Not likely though.

You could argue the pope was very clever, by denying his intentions were to insult mohammad he knew there would be thousands of death threats around the world calling for violence against him thus actually proving the quotes of 7 centuries ago to be correct.

Although his quotes are being mis-reported, lets say he did say that.

The Muslims who burned churches in the wake of the Pope's remarks supposedly linking Islam to violence seem to have proved his 'point'. (that was never said in such a way in the first place)

Oh the irony in this. All these low iq dips*ts are proving the Pope's original statement (the quotes) correct. John Paul II. fought the moral roots of communism and in the end it crumbled easily. This guy might be able to do that to the Islamo-Fascists. :)

Hundreds of angry demonstrators burned an effigy of the pope in the Iraqi city of Basra and called for him to be tried by an international court, while Al-Qa'eda threatened to wage holy war until the Pope and the West were defeated.

"We shall break the cross and spill the wine ... God will (help) Muslims to conquer Rome ... (May) God enable us to slit their throats, and make their money and descendants the bounty of the mujahideen," said the statement, posted on Sunday on an Internet site often used by al Qaeda and other militant groups.

as stupid as the pope's quote itself.. :lui:

Much like the infamous cartoon protests, they're taking this way out of proportion. I'm sure equally inflamatory comments have been made about Christians by Muslim leaders. And those weren't even the Pope's words, he was quoting a Byzantine emperor. He went out of his way to stress that those weren't his words. I'm not saying his lecture wasn't controversial, but it was more of a cautionary lecture against religious violence, not an explicit attack on Islam.

how is murdering a nun revenge for words the pope said? seriously ****ed up idiots really. i say the pope fights back and kick ass.

I'm not a fan of the Pope or the Catholic church in general, but the response by muslims is again way beyond ridiculous. Any reasonable person can clearly see his words (not even his words) were not what they're being made out to be. Burning churches, killing nuns, vowing death and violence...c'mon. I think religion in general is retarded, but muslims are fueling their own stereotype on a daily basis now, which in turn just gives further justification for the Geoerge Bush's of the world to do what they do.

As soon as someone starts an athiest paradise somewhere, I'm moving...

Well, while we must stress that many muslims in know way endorse the extreme reactions of others (look at me being all politically correct, who'd a thought it?), I agree that what is now becoming the standard islamic response to anything of this nature is really rather sickening and, as you say, does nothing but build and add truth to the stereotypes. I dont necessarily consider religion to be retarded, but I find fundamentalists of all religions (except the whacked out mellow ones) to be extremely frightening - someone that is so devoted to and wrapped up in a cause that they will respond in the manner that many are responsing to this is, in my opinion, clinically insane.

I personally find the regular statements from islamic religious leaders that "The west is the great satan", "america should burn" and "enemies of islam must be destroyed" far more offensive than these statements by the pope, as much as I hate him for the facist bastard he is. The hypocrisy present in some elements of their religion, as in the catholic church, is really quite staggering. I found it interesting to see that much of the negative reaction is being fueled by the very same Iranian newspaper that not so long ago hosted a competition for who could draw the best holocaust cartoon

And, as shinji said, the worst thing about all this is that is makes the actions of people like Bush seem justifiable and acceptable. While constantly telling us the contrary, Bush would like nothing more than for us to view all muslims as terrorists, he lumped Iraq in with Al-Qaeda and now he'd like to lump Iran in with those two, and hence it is beneficial to no-one more than him that this should turn into an east versus west battle.

Well, perhaps the use of language was somewhat extreme ;)

But yeah, I personally consider it an act of genocide to so be so adamently unrelenting on the use of condoms that millions of Africans die from AIDS purely from obeying his instructions and the instructions of the organisation he commands, and I personally consider it facist to set down strict rules for how people must live their lives which serve no other purpose than the legislation of taste. But I appreciate it that this is not a particularly popular view :p

Not many people want to admit it, but the world has a serious problem now that just has to be addressed. I wish you could sit down and talk with these radical Islamo-fascists, but I see no way of getting through to them for their hatred of all things Western.

We all know the road this is going down, and I don't like it one bit. :(
