The Official NFL Fantasy Football / Preseason Thread

Ok, so I just went out and bought "THE BOOK" aka the 2004 Fantasy Football Index, and I'm about to read through it cover to cover more or less. Preparing for the Fantasy Football Draft is probably my #2 sports moment of the year behind the NBA Draft; it actually might be better because my team is involved.

So here's the thread to talk about fantasy players, draft strategies, player rankings, sleepers, busts, etc. I'm assuming every American who cares about football will be in at least one Fantasy Football League this year (probably more), so here's the thread to help each other out. When I get through this thing and have my initial opinions on the players, I'll make a bigger post, but anyone else is welcome.

I don't know anything about the NFL although apparently an AFL star (Ben Graham) is considering a move to the NFL! He's a massive kick, and I'm pretty sure that's why American clubs are interested in him.

It's never too early. Nothing much changes from here on out, except for the injuries and the occasional depth chart change.

I just don't like getting to worked about football in July. As for my early thoughts on fantasy football this season I can sum it up very easily.

Feel free to do so.

Maybe we should all work collectively to prepare a Fantasy Football Value chart.. which is very helpful when you do the draft... Some players that come to mind as most valuable are Peyton manning and Ladainian Tomlinson.

Shifty do you play in any online leagues? I only do leagues with my buddies because I am weary of anything involving my money and the internet. If you could make any reccomendations I would appericate it.

I play in the big league with 7 of my friends, and that's for cash, and I usually play in a yahoo league or two. Other than the one with friends though, I don't play for money.

Here are some of the draft tips I can give, but I must say this, although I have gotten to the Super Bowl in my big league, I've never actually won the damn thing.

Ok, first tip is to take Running Backs early and often; everyone will tell you this, and it's because it's true. If you have the 5th pick in a 12 person league, you can either take your #1 running back, someone like Portis or Jamal Lewis, or you can wait a round and be stuck with Steven Davis as your #1 guy. There's a big disparity there. On the other hand, Brett Favre was probably the #8-10 QB selected in most drafts last year, and he threw for the most TDs of anyone.

The second tip is to know every player on the draft board. You don't win a league because of your first 3 picks, they help, but you win the league by getting great players in the 5th-8th rounds. You don't want to take someone who is in decline over a potential stud.

Third tip is to trust yourself more than anyone. Don't take LaDanian Tomlinson at #2 if you don't think he's the second best player; instead go for Portis, or Ahman Green if you think they're better. But combine what you think with what experts think; don't take Mushin Muhammad as your #2 reciever because you like him and like the Panthers, he's just not worthy of such a high pick.

And also, if someone gets injured, you need to pick up the backup if you think they can put up huge numbers. Last year I picked up Rudy Johnson and Marc Bulger, they carried me into the playoffs.

I agree with pennington10, traning camp hasn't even start yet, but is always good to talk this early about the NFL espeacilly rookies and then the whole team.

BTW i think that the best rookie in fantasy terms will be the great TE from UM Winslow (H) and Fitzgerald IF and that's a big if the cardinals can get a decent QB.
