The Lost Greatness

I was wondering about the fate of teams that lost their greatness. The first and only team that came to my mind is Leeds United. Team that I used to root for and still follow what’s going on in the club. Semi-finalist of Champions League with players such as Smith, Kewell, Robinson, Viduka. All of them reached their best at Elland Road. Now they are struggling in Championship, a few years back it was only League One.

My question is, do you remember any more teams like Leeds?

Haha!

My dad always talks about the glory days of Sheffied Wednesday and Nottingham Forest and the like but those were before my time.

When I started watching football seriously Leeds were still a good club (these were the David O'Leary days) so I have witnessed their entire fall from grace. Newcastle with Alan Shearer, Laurent Robert, Nolberto Solano etc were also a good team though I guess their decline has not been so great as they are now back in the top division and pull off results from time to time.

I remember however Deportivo were always a good Champions League side and one you didnt want to meet, and I know they are now down a division and havent been a threat for a long long time, and they did win one (league title) if I remember correctly?

A couple of years ago I would have added AS Monaco, they dumped us out of the champions league under Ranieri and made the final that year before falling on hard times, but times are not hard there any more.

Boavista and River Plate are other examples from leagues I dont really follow.

Still in top flight for football and it's only been for 1 season but worth mentioning AC Milan and Manchester united.

These teams have definitely lost their greatness as of late.

I dont think we can really count teams like that until they have proven they are not going to bounce back - a couple of years ago I would have added AS Roma to the list but now they are title challengers again.

When I first went to France as a child the town where I stayed was all RCL fans and that season they were challenging for the title, now they are in Ligue 2 and finished 12th last season.

Nottingham Forest, since 1998 they went downhill and unable to return to the Premier League, Leeds United it's in the same situation also

I follow the J. League. I'm an Omiya Ardija fan!

The Cosmos are a good one, but if you were going to use defunct American teams I'd go with Fall River or Bethlehem Steel.

Did you catch the final league day if the season last year? I don't follow the league at all, but being here in Japan and not having much to do that day, I watched the game, only to realize what a last day of football for the J-league it was.

Just to mention, I think you commented it on another thread after I posted about it, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

Hopefully I'm able to catch a game once the season re-starts while I'm here.

Valencia, league and Uefa Cup champions league a decade ago with such a great squad Canizares, Ayala, Aimar etc. Ronald Koeman took the liberty to destroy the team for one season subsequently and the crippling finances didn't help either.

Stade de Reims would fit also, they played 2 European Cup finals against Real Madrid in the 50s, and not long ago they were in the 3th or 4th league. Now they bounced back into Ligue 1 and got as far as the first half of the table.

Who are the perennial under achievers in international football? Hungary? Czech-o-Slovakia? Netherlands? Portugal? Poland?

Not sure if they count, but Perugia had a few good years in their history as well but spent the last few years in Serie C1 and C2, going bankrupt almost every two seasons.

Udinese, Palermo, Sevilla, Deportivo, AZ Alkmaar, Heerenveen, Fulham, Aston Villa. they weren't the most successful clubs but they were constantly in the top 5 of the table (maybe except the last two) with decent runs in EL or even CL. shout-out to Auxerre too.
