To me it makes a lot of sense to try to utilise the talent we loaned out this season - we obviously need fresh faces and fresh attitudes, but given the lack of value in the transfer market and our assumed decline in pulling power after our appalling season it would seem unlikely that we can do that through buying players alone - if we try it will be like Man Utd's recent spending. Cuadradro, van Ginkel, Musonda Jr., Christiansen etc have all had excellent seasons last season, mature seasons for real clubs and all in positions which were problematic. I see no reason why all couldn't be brought back and given a chance, even with the sale of a couple of the big names which disappointed last season (Fabregas) to free up the space. In turn, the money we make from those sales can be added to whatever transfer kitty is already being assembled to do what we really need to do which is bring in a couple of huge 50-60m talents.

I want Pellegrini to get the Everton job. Perfect fit. Get in Caballero and Demichelis on free transfers to fill up the big time experience gap. They have a bunch of stalled young players, too. Sell Lukaku and Stones for a fortune and invest.

He is world class for clubs like Villarreal, Malaga, Everton or City.

It seems logical to me - Everton is English equivalent of the Spanish clubs where Pellegrini had most success. Demichelis has nothing left to give though, don't talk about bringing him along. But it must be sorely tempting to offer it to Benitez and for him to accept, despite his Liverpool past, as they probably want someone a little bit tougher after nice guy Martinez and Pellegrini is not exactly fire and brimstone. Lots and lots of names linked to this job, not surprising as its a decent project with new owners and one would assume new funds

Yeah, his track record with that level of club is really impressive and now he has pretty good experience in PL so integration is hardly going to be an issue for him.

Pellegrini compared to Martinez is a giant of the game to be honest. I was pretty keen on him taking over from Wenger but that would have been a disaster by how it has turned out. He does have talent though and may be a spell away from the PL would help him grow.

And I actually want Benitez to stay in Newcastle and see what he does there. That's a serious manager, with a crazy fanbase, huge finances/stadium and a very talented if totally unbalanced squad. It'd be interesting to see how it would turn out.

Demichelis as a back up player may not be too bad but he is probably done at this level.

Its an interesting project with that squad and young potential too.

Probably why he stayed....

I wonder what he will make of standing in the 'dugout' of Burton Albion's shit hole 6000 seater stadium that I am not sure if even have toilets or if they just shit in a hole in the ground. Think he'll miss the bernabau?

Is he the biggest name ever to manage in the lower leagues other than in the early, formatory career stages? Only other possibility I can think of is Sven

Who else would want Benítez after last season... best he can do is to promote Newcastle and start a project there.

I would have thought all the vacant 'level two' clubs (Everton, Valencia, ac Milan) etc would be interested in him, he didn't exactly disgrace himself last season, everyone fails at Madrid and he made visible improvements already at Newcastle

Spain culture doesnt has much respect for coaches, if you dont win you are useless. Specially at Real Madrid.

I would have thought that all but he Real Madrid fans would have realised that the Madrid coach position is more volatile than president of Egypt and success or failure in that post is not representative of managerial ability. Surely the Valencia fans still like him? I actually imagined his reputation would be worse in Italy than Spain as his inter spell was genuine failure

EDIT: I suppose he did decent job at Napoli

Valencia fans are the only ones in Spain that respect him for the memories. But Valencia fans are the worst, if they get Benitez back and team lost 3 games in a row tjey would be singing "Benitez vete ya" in Mestalla.

He did well at Napoli but Sarri did it better (H).

After such an appalling end to last season surely now the only way is up?

Who's gonna get that job? Heard some half hearted links to Sanchez Flores and Pellegrini...

Edit: Pellegrini had no trouble quickly getting another job in Spain after Real Madrid sacking why any different for Rafa?

Rafa I think likes the idea of building Newcastle. Think they have obviously offered him a decent amount to stay as well. He loves the UK and that probably helped him. Think Newcastle will come straight back up.

I see Villa back up next year and within a few years competing for European football... And Benitez taking Newcastle back up..
