It's been said here before, but Rooney should be the one out wide. He is better at the role and offers much more defense going back, while in all honesty he isn't better (or at least not much better) than Kagawa in his favored AMC position.

Rooney plays more as a second striker these days, not really AMC but he drops back a lot. We are essentially playing mostly 4-4-1-1. Problem with playing Kagawa as AMC is that he can't head the ball and can't shoot from distance. For Man Utd if he is playing behind the striker, he should be able to head the ball and shoot from distance because we play a lot on the wings and score a lot from headers.

To do anything other than play RvP as out and out striker with Rooney as supporting striker is madness, if Kagawa wants to play he has to fit around that.

Rooney doesn't like playing as a winger and if he plays out of position, he'll get angry, will want to leave, will get frustrated and will get red cards. He wanted to leave last season because he played 1 or 2 games out of position, in central midfield even though he said that on twitter at some point:

Haha yeah. Honestly, he has the skillset to be a great central midfielder, but it is too late now - a striker and goal scorer/creator is what he is and always will be. It is up to him to make sure he remains fit enough to play this role effectively. if you want a proper CM, sell Kagawa and buy De Rossi rather than trying to change Rooney.

I hope he or Woodland learns how to sign top players because otherwise, the team may well look like that. Ok I am exaggerating. The next transfer windows may be better because he knows the team better and knows what we are missing. If he was able to purchase players like Arteta, Baines or Fellaini and develop them while he was Everton, there is no reason why he won't be able to continue that at United.
