England won't win a world cup in my lifetime. The whole attitude to football in England is ****ing awful. It's the wrong way round from both players and coaches, but for the players to change we'll need to get a change of coaching ethos. For England to ever have a chance of producing consistent world class or top class players we need a comeplete overhaul.
So, coaches, the three greatest countries for producing talent are Brazil, Argentina and the best at it, are Holland. I say they're the best because they have a tiny population yet produce a massive amount of talent, and do you know why all three create great players? Because they don't train kids as strikers, as defenders, as midfielders or as goalies... they train footballers. We don't, at a young age we'll see a kid who's good at defending or is good in the air and say, ok lets make him a centrehalf. That's fine if you want 1 good player out a 1000000. What we need to do is say, ok he's a great finisher, lets put him in defense. Let's put him in goal. Lets make him a footballer rather than a striker. Take Johan Cruijff, one of the greatest ever players, he could play probably anywhere on the pitch. He was the "total footballer" and his 1974 World Cup team was one of the greatest ever. Now look a the Brazilian WC winning teams, they decide where you play based on how many goals you score in a season. If it's 60 you're upfront if it's 40 it's midfield, if its 20 your defence and if it's none it's in goal for you. What this makes are defenders who can dribble, who can pull of 60 yard passes or goalies who can take 35 yard freekicks one end and save penalties in the other.
What England makes are one dimensional players, and everyone (and I myself have done this) complains when a right footer is played left wing, or a striker in midfield. For now, we'll have to deal with this, but at grassroot we have to encourage variation. Gerrard is unlucky right now, along with Rooney, because they are the only "total" footballers we have. Rooney can probably play anywhere outfield and do a good job, same with Gerrard. And Gerrard suffers in particular, he's forced at right wing where he's effective but not as much as in the centre. He's forced out due to the rigidness of Lampard. Also with coaches, certainly at grassroot, every team should be encouraged to put their best coach at U12, and their second best at U10, and when those players reach U14 and start playing in leagues, it's not the coaches job to win every match. It's the coaches job to get them to develop into footballers. Parents will complain and will argue with the coach, so get rid of them.
And what will the result of this be? You'll have a stronger, deeper England squad in 10 years time, and the league will be 5 times stronger. We won't have 4 teams that'll play football, and 16 who defend. You'll have 15 or 16 teams playing football, and it being effective, with promoted sides and one or two others defending all the time.
