Gerrard was pretty poor defensively too, there was a lot of space down he and Rooneys side for Darmian and Candreva to move inside with

Too many Liverpool players. Too many losers to win. Even the manager is a Liverpool reject.

Rooney played on the left flank in the first half and right flank in the second half. That's a really poor decision. You either play him as SS or CF or not play him at all. Everyone knows he is frustrating on the flank.

Sterling IMO is hugely overrated (at the moment). He is a flashy great dribbler but has no end product. Can't cross, can't score. He is a huge prospect though and I'm sure he'll become great but right now, he is not good enough yet. To play him behind the striker is ridiculous. The commentators were raving about him but most of his dribbles ended up absolutely nowhere.

Welbeck, like with Rooney, should not be starting on the wings. Based on today's game, I think this formation would be more effective:

Barkley on the left is not ideal but better than anyone else available to play there. Sterling is also better than Lallana.

I was a little disappointed by Gerrard, he didnt really do the defensive work and neither did he really support the attack, and his dead balls seemed a bit lacking. Dare I say that maybe he is just a bit too old for that Brazilian heat?

All the old Italians at the place where I watched the game we pointing at Sterling and asking "who is that guy?". They were very impressed by him.

Yeah Sterling was the most impressive player after Sturridge for me. I always felt Chelsea dropped the ball in a huge way when the sold him.

Impressive to watch but little end product. He shouldn't be playing behind the striker instead of Rooney or Barkley. Him there puts 2 players out of position (Welbeck and Rooney).

Sterling has been at the tip of a midfield diamond most of the season, that's why he's there for England. I do agree though, I'd play Barkley in the middle and Lallana on the left with Sterling out on the right. Rooney is crap as I've been saying for quite some time; his position had nothing to do with it.

Anyone with half a brain would have put sterling on chiellini all night, that's where he did most of his "damage" per say

in the final ~20-25 minutes, he was going past everyone on the right like they weren't even there ... and he wasn't the only one who found success on that flank ... thankfully the crosses being delivered were consistently woeful ...

Fucking press is just screwing it up as always, putting unnecessary pressure on Rooney which is why he always fails to impress at World Cups. Stupid English media has a lot to do with it.

England are going out and Rooney will pull another Messi 2010. Uruguay have a more potent strike force than England.

I don't understand why there are so many people saying that Messi didn't do anything special in 2010. He provided lots of goal scoring opportunities for others, had to play as a striker/playmaker and was quite unlucky not to score any goals.

And not to forget that their coach was Maradona... who left out players like Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti who were integral part of Inter's treble winning squad the very same year. So i wouldn't really blame Messi for their poor showings.
