A more realistic view of Trappatoni's decision

Opinion: Trap right to ignore Alberto
There is little doubt that Alberto Gilardino deserved to be included in Italy’s squad for Euro 2004, but should his omission really have caused so much controversy? Obviously scoring 23 goals in Serie A would usually be enough to win an international call-up but the Parma youngster was hardly set to spearhead the attack.
The decision to leave Alberto at home has nothing to do with the quality of the player. The fact is that he is a 21-year-old who has never even won a call-up to the full squad. As Trap said today, he already has Christian Vieri and Bernardo Corradi who he has great faith in. Two players who were key to the 4-2-3-1 system that ensured qualification.
Gilardino has a great future ahead of him but this is the same player that last season scored just four Serie A goals. He also started this campaign as a substitute behind Adriano. Form is obviously vital but nobody should underestimate the importance of experience in major tournaments.
It’s a shame that a wide cross section of the Italian media have criticised Trap so much today. Some even claiming that it was "madness" to leave out Gilardino and call-up Marco Di Vaio as his sixth attacker. Yet on a tactical level, the inclusion of the Juventus player is more valuable as he has played as a second striker and wide on the left for Trap recently.
Trap was also slammed by some for leaving out Roberto Baggio and Pippo Inzaghi. But was anybody really expecting either to feature? Baggio was given a farewell game in April after being absent from the national side for five years. He played no part in qualification and it was clear that the player didn’t feature in Trap’s plans.
As for Inzaghi, he underwent ankle surgery in the last month and he has had an injury plagued campaign. He did play a key role in qualifying for the tournament with that hat-trick against Wales - which effectively saved Trap’s job - but he was too much of a gamble. With Alex Del Piero, Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano all having fitness issues this season, taking Pippo would have been too risky.
It’s such a shame that Italy’s Euro 2004 campaign has started in such controversy. Let’s not forget that the Coach has selected players such as Buffon, Nesta, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Totti, Del Piero and Vieri, amongst many others, who could lead the Azzurri to glory this summer.
Trap should also be praised for selecting Angelo Peruzzi as one of his ‘keepers. The Lazio No 1 has had a great campaign and could even edge out Francesco Toldo as the second choice after his difficulties this year. Even if the inclusion of Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini, instead of Lazio defender Giuseppe Favalli, may have been a better selection - given the fact that Christian Panucci could play at left-back if Zambrotta is unavailable.
