The 4-5-1 The killer of entertaining football?

it's not about the system is the mentality of the team. Portugal and Holland (at least till the Euro) play 4x5x1, and they are among the most entertaining NTs.

Amen to that.

Playing the right kind of players in each position helps too, something Sven hasn't grasped yet.

chelsea are boring in every department. THey win, so what, who wouldnt in their position?

4-5-1 was the tactic of Irrureta's mighty Deportivo I suppose.. with a striker like Roy Makaay and supporters like Luque and Victor, a playmaker like Valeron, and attacking fullbacks like Manuel Pablo and Romero (or Capdevilla), that football was entertaining for me.. none of them are real worldclass players but they were producing a nice cute football..

I think what you're seeing now is a realisation of how important the midfield battle is. Managers now see this is where the game is won and lost and flood the midfield to try and increase their chances of winning the battle.

However, it's all about how the midfield is set up. Some teams can just play 5 flat out midfielders (including a couple Makalele style DMs) and try and strangle the football being played by the other side, but as others have pointed out teams like Portugal and Holland put an emphasis on wide players, often turning into a 4-3-3 when they're attacking, and when they're in full flow it looks fantastic to watch. Just means that the wide players e.g. Robben, C. Ronaldo etc need to have a good option to get in support and run beyond the main striker.

yes mentality plays a part but a defensive 4-5-1 is FAR more defensive than a 4-4-2 defensive line. You cut out all the space.

I say everyone plays a 1-4-5 formation. That'd be fun. And monkey rush rules.

yeah, it's not about the system, it's how you arrange it and the kind of players you put in...portugal plays 4-5-1, but arranged almost to a 4-3-3 and the midfield is very attacking (except for costinha/petit, but you gotta have someone..)

Bingo, sour grapes. Dreath, why dont you submit this gem to the Daily Mail? They love printing anti-Chelsea nonsense like this.

Why, oh why, is entertaing football always somehow synonamous with leaky backlines and tactically inept defenses? Does nobody care, ever to see well thought out, tactically precise games that happen to end with only a goal being scored but are entertaining none the less? Seria A fans seem to be able to appreciate the finer tactical aspects of the game. Why not everyone else.

And I guess the 11 matches that ended 1-0 to Chelsea last year represent most all, if were being honest here, of the 58 games played across the board.
Take into account the fact that 38 times a clean sheet was kept, and the fact that not once did the team score more than 4, and you begin to see how this many similar results come about.

Football, in whatever style it comes, became all about the trophies that go with it when money became so integral to the game. Playing beautifully gets a team nothing. Winning is purely what matters, and I guess its gotten up some peoples ass that Chelsea cant seem to stop in the last couple of weeks.

oh yeah....

You talk about boredom, and 1-0s being against the good of football.

Mind you have you heard of a chap called George Graham? He managed Arsenal once and was the king of boring. Just because you now have a few Frenchman playing 1 touch football does not give you a god gifted right to talk about entertainment and make stupid posts that disregard and defame the way other clubs play, esp. when you follow Arsenal of all clubs.

You only hate boring football because Chelsea is winning, never bothered an Arsenal fan when it was Arsenal playing boring? Aye? And you never heard Chelsea fans complaining about Arsenal being boring, did ya?

The most prolific killer of entertaining football was George Graham, he managed Arsenal.
and that too

I think its time for someone to start crying into their beer, because jealous, out of sorts gooners arent about to shake the confidence of the worlds most recently successful manager, and this team isnt going away, despite the collective wet dreams people have about Abramovich being assassinated

Words like these make me think back to a post on another forum. Someone put it, with a touch of bias, as well as ive ever heard it:

Posted by Kenn, CSR (chelsea supporter registry) Forum, 22 Mar, 2005: Subject: Anti-Chelsea Tirade

Of course, every football Lilliputian is now in the business of pulling down Chelsea, be they UEFA parasites or Man U fans. Why do you think Sir Alex wrote Frisk a letter of sympathy over this affair? These people are out there sending out direct and subliminal anti-Chelsea messages with the hope that our charge on all fronts could be stopped; but it’s all going to end in tears for every one of them. Chelsea’s domination of world soccer is written in the stars and there’s nothing any of these antagonists can do about it.
Thats arrogant as all hell, but everyone hates us and we dont care

Anyone see what Bolton did today?

I can't even watch most Premiership sides these days. Only Arsenal, Fulham, Man City, West Ham (and Man Utd when they want to) play attractive stuff.

And it's not even the tactical boring stuff, they just hoof the ball up field and shoot it.

Greece (4-5-1) did very well & succeeded in EURO 2004 because all their players were mostly on the bench from the big clubs in which they didn't play them often. As such, Otto Rehhagel, is one smart coach to put fully fit players into a match & have nothing to lose as they were unseeded team in the tourney. Entertaining or not, it's a matter whether they can make it.

Speaking of Greece using a 4-5-1, Otto Rehhagel is a smart coach to select his top players from clubs that don't very often put in their starting line up on the European domestic leagues. As such, the players have 100% fit physical conditions since they are just 'secondary' players in the clubs & know how to face the big European NT's in the tourney like EURO 2004.

Greek players have low profile players in their big clubs & haven't played very often in the starting line up from the clubs. Last but not least, they had nothing to lose in the big stage like EURO.

Otto Rehhagel is a smart coach to play these 'secondary' players from the beginning 90 minutes since they have great physical conditions.
