Taking direct free kicks on PS2

I am having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to put the shots on net... I'm lining up the arrow where I want the kick to go, and also using the right controller to put the right spin on the ball.

I also get the kick meter almost perfect..but still, it either goes straight at the keeper, or the shot goes wide

any help is appreciated !!!

Try holding L1 while you power up. Even if you tap it, the ball will belt towards the keeper, and most of the time will beat him.
