Why not creating a complete career mode? Something like NBA Live has.
-You could buy, sell and trade players, but only with the cpu consent.
-You get $$$ by winning competitions.
-Players get old and eventually retire.
-Players get better/worse with time.
-Best players are called to participate in the NTs.
-End of the year awards.

EA, if you don't know how to do it, ask your NBA Live partners.
