Well, I finally bought my copy. Couldn't find it in Holland (Amsterdam) at first, but now I've got it!
I have to say: it's an excellent game. I'm 31 years of age and have played a LOT of soccer games through the years. Does Emlyn Hughes Socces mean anything to you guys? Great game, way back in the 1980's. Since that game and my switch to PC I've played Microprose Soccer, Sensible Soccer (Atari), Sensible World of Soccer (PC) and all of the FIFA-series. Fifa has given me some great times (esp. Fifa 98 rtwc) and I don't agree with people who think Fifa 2001 is a bad game. I've played it to pieces and it was the best soccer game for PC - until now.
Here is Uefa Challenge. I've bought it mainly for three reasons: 1. All the enthousiastic stories from you fellow experts, 2. The unbelieveble fact that the people who made the game attent at this forum! 3. The even more unbelieveble fact that those people listen to us and show no hesitation to create one or more patches.
But, before I get too enthousiastic, as is said before: not all is well with U.C. What I would like to be changed in the very nearby future:
1. The player-select key is NOT the pass-key! That might be revolutionary (I've never played a soccer game with such), but it is hell to us experienced players. Do I get used to this? I don't think so.
2. The ball movement is not always that realistic. There seems to be a slight delay when the ball is shot or passed (esp. with high passes).
3. There are numoruos situations where the A.I. freezes up: players just stand there with the ball just a couple of meters away, waiting until someone from the opposition is going to take that seemingly dreadfull leatherisch object away... I hope this is a fixable bug. I've only played at the easy level though, so it might be just that.
4. I played in the league challenge, or what's it called, with Ajax, and my great young defender Chivu managed to get three red cards in three matches on a row! Have the rules been softened? Sending away just enough, next time better? Surely when someone gets three red cards in a row some sort of punishment must follow, or am I too harsh?
5. The speed. It's too fast this game. Please Jon and Stephen: don't make the same mistake EA did with their FIFA2000 game: putting action, speed and 'spectacular' events before tactical gameplay. The latter is the first thing I want from a soccer game. I'm not saying that UC haven't got it: in fact it is the only PC game that has a lot of it, but much too often the gem that the gameplay of this game is gets dusted by the speed. Please slow it down, or let us select the speed.
There are other things that I would like to be changed. Many people have said wise things about it and I will attend to these things later, but I think they're a bit more long term changes (more to edit, statistics, save-replay, save-highlights etc)
But even now there is so much in this game that I love it. It is a great game and the fact that I can say that, even when I've just lost to bloody Feyenoord (with 1-6, my God...)speaks for itself.
Congrats to you Jon, and your team. I really hope you will keep listening to us so UC can become the best game ever, period.
(It would be a bit boring to have nothing to complain about anymore, though...)
(sorry for my terrible englisch)
