Nicholson a Don Deal As Barry Signs On

Aberdeen today completed the signing of Dunfermline Athletic and Scotland midfielder Barry Nicholson on a three year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Announcing the arrival of the 26 year old, Pittodrie Director of Football Willie Miller said. 'It's no secret that we've been searching to bring additional quality and skill to the squad and we've identified certain targets. However, we also don't have an open cheque book and we have to ensure the funds we do have are utilised wisely and on players we are convinced will improve the quality of the overall squad.

'It is also crucial that the players we do sign are absolutely committed to playing for Aberdeen and in Barry's case, right from the outset, he made it clear he wanted to come to the Dons. He's a top quality player, a Scottish internationalist and I'm delighted he's agreed to join us.'

The Dumfries born player, who missed the latter part of last season to undergo a hernia operation from which he is currently making a good recovery, added.

'I'm really excited at the prospect of being reunited with Jimmy Calderwood and Jimmy Nicholl and the fact things took a wee while to get sorted out was absolutely nothing to do with Aberdeen. This is a huge club and a fantastic move for me. My recent operation was a complete success and I should be fit and ready for the start of pre season at the end of the month along with the rest of the lads.'

Nicholson, who has played three times for Scotland, was with Dunfermline for five years, having joined from Rangers in the summer of 2000. He captained the Pars on several occasions in the absence of regular skipper Scott Thomson.

pars fans are now telling us how little they care! and have already pointed out that we didnt sign beckham! damn! :D should be signing former hoop jamie smith at the end of the week aswell which wouldnt be a bad signing :fool:

wouldnt be right if i didnt mention the fact that we are top of the 2005/2006 campaign at the moment and rangers are at the bottom. last season was brilliant and im hopin it can be the same again... not just as a red but just as an spl fan. im still not too confident cos we have ditched so many players and our squad is incredibly thin. nae idea who will get 3rd but we sure as hell wont be seeing utd higher than 8th cos they are and forever will be shíte. i also see the 3rd farce are wantin to get bobby robson on there board! Boyd rejects Kilmarnock extension

Boyd is Kilmarnock's most saleable asset
Kilmarnock striker Kris Boyd looks increasingly like leaving the club after rejecting the offer of a two-year extension to his contract.
Boyd's agent Raymond Sparkes told the Daily Record: "Kris has no intention of coming back to sign a contract.

"It might have been different if this had been a deal which blew us away but that certainly isn't the case."

Boyd, 21, has a year to run on his current terms and has been the subject of repeated bids from Aberdeen.

Kilmarnock have knocked back three offers from Aberdeen for top-scorer Boyd and the Ayrshire outfit say they no longer have to sell after a financial restructuring of the club.

The last bid from Aberdeen was believed to be around £175,000.

But Kilmarnock general manager Dave McKinnon still believes Boyd could remain at Rugby Park.

He said: "Kris will meet (manager) Jim Jefferies and we are hopeful of finalising the finer details of the deal."

Last week Boyd said: "I'll look at them both and see what's happening, but I have another year of my contract to go here anyway.

"But there's no pressure on me, it's down to what Aberdeen and Kilmarnock can offer.

"Aberdeen are a bigger club, they have bigger crowds and they have a name in Europe, but I'll make a decision once I've spoken to Kilmarnock."

Team Captain
Matthaeus applies for Hearts manager's job

Tue Jun 14, 2005 12:19 PM BST

GLASGOW, June 14 (Reuters) - Former Germany captain Lothar Matthaeus has applied for the vacant manager's job at Hearts, the Scottish Premier League club said on Tuesday.
"He has expressed an interest by post and will be considered along with the other candidates," a club spokeswoman said.

Matthaeus, 44, has been coach of Hungary since December 2003. The 1990 World Cup winner with West Germany retired from playing in 2000 and has coached Rapid Vienna and Partizan Belgrade.

John Robertson quit as manager of Hearts last month after being offered the position of assistant head coach in a review of football operations.

Captain Steven Pressley and coach John McGlynn were put in charge of the team for their last two games of the season. Hearts finished fifth in the league.

hahah. that would be random. i still think derek whyte will end up in charge (H)

we signed another old firm reject. jamie shmee... good signing in my opinion :) just need a couple of strikers and a back up defender and the league in the bag :jambo:

Former Celtic winger Jamie Smith has signed a pre-contract that, subject to a medical, will see him join Aberdeen on a two year deal when his current contract with Dutch club Den Haag runs out at the end of the month.

Pittodrie Director of Football Willie Miller is naturally delighted that the 24 year old, who was being tracked by a number of clubs, has opted for the Reds. "It's no secret that Jamie is someone both Jimmy and myself admire and he falls into exactly the category of player we want to bring to the club in that he's young, ambitious and skilful and made it clear from early in our discussions that he wants to play for Aberdeen.
"Like Barry Nicholson, Jamie has already been involved at international level, that is something he wants more of and I'm sure he'll prove to be a very valuable addition to the squad over the coming season."

Prior to joining Den Haag a year ago, Smith made fifty-three appearances for Celtic and played twice for his country, against Austria and the Republic of Ireland in 2003.
