First familiarize with all the rules.

Watch games and have fun. Euro 2004 is very good.

Try to play in an amateur local league or something. Youth development in the US is everywhere. Try to see what is available around your area. Just play for the love of the game and have one.

To start with your footwork, buy a mini-sized football, Size 1.

The normal size is Size 5.

now use the size 1 ball and hit it against any wall. Pass it to the wall and anticpate the rebound. Hit it repeatedly.

Try with two-touches if you can't control well at first. Kick the ball, wait for the bounce, trap the ball, then kick again.

Adjust the distance from the wall yourself. This kind of simple football games was what my dad taught me when I was 4.

Use both feet if you can, right, then left, then right, then left.

Go play 5-a-side games.

Go to the garage and mark a couple of places. Try hitting certain part of a wall with shots. Shoot with your shoe-laces.
Make your own goal and improvise.

And post and tell us more about your progress. Good luck.

Welcome to the world of REAL football

you sounded like David Beckham for a second there, you know. heh. But you're right. Practice is the key.

I learnt to play football when I was 5 during recess. 20 kids running around chasing a ball, no teamwork whatsoever. No formation. hilarious.

But the most important thing is to have fun playing the game, you also have to have heart and love for the game. Dontplay just bcuz its wat all of your freinds are playing if you like football instead of soccer than thats fine you dont need to change yourself so you can be wit ur freinds, not trying to sound like your muther or anytin just tryin to help.

go full on gung ho in your tryout game. just full on aggressive.

dont make a fool of yourself though. ;)

this along with training mentioned by others. running, dribbling, crossing (for counter attack), etc.

Learn to dive, seriously. I'm utter crap, but diving makes me look wonderful.

Works for any position.

both practice and experience is the key you have to know the basics of defense.

1) never charge at an oncomming forward. wait for him to make a mistake and then tackle. A quick forward will simply push the ball in the opposite direction and take off if you come at him to hard. If you are overtaking him on the side and you know you are faster than him and you have plenty of space before you get to your box (on a breakaway, no passing outlets) again wait till he pushes the ball far enough ahead of him and then overtake him to steal the ball.

2) when you are 1v1 with a forward dont stand facing him. Turn your body about 45 degree angle towards the sideline. That way if he tries to push the ball past you and then run past to re-gather the ball or something you have a lesser disadvantage because you are partially facing the direction that he is going.

I dont have much more time and i've got to go, so i found a site that may help you.

www.expertfootball.com
It has good tips for all positions and training drills to do. Even a question and answer section.

Hope it helps you

EDIT:
I just realized that you've never played before. That site i mentioned is going to be a big help. (i think) Make sure you work on your stamina, speed is going to help a lot too. Just work on the basics first. Then go more advanced.
