Skycam Introduction.

Todays FA Cup match between Man Utd and Millwall will be the first time that the broadcaster has chosen to use a 'Skycam' for a soccer match. A little camera will hover over the players, dipping down to around 7 metres off the ground, and then rising to about 40 metres, but im not to sure about all that stuff.

The photo i've attached is a glimpse of what the skycam will look like, it was taken at an AFL match by a melbournion photographer. I cant wait to see what it looks like whilst moving.

so the cameras would only be 7 meters above the players?

but I thought Sky already had player cam, what was that?

Yep, 7 metres above the player, but you'd think they'd never get down that low. Im not sure if they've got a similiar cam, all I know is that its the first time its used for a soccer match.

Player cam is a Camera that would focus on a player for a certain amount of time during the game, then it would focus on a different player.
Those who have Sky Digital can see the Player Cam in Interactive mode(red button on the Sky Digital remote), and you could also watch the match from different camera's aswell.

how is the camera supposed to hover over the pitch? :|

It is connected to a thin, retractable pole, which inturn is connected to a pole that is crossed from one bit of the roof to the other. Complicated stuff, I think we can expect a few flaws.

what if the ball hits it?

Thats for the courts to decide :)

In AFL, if the balls hit it, it will be a ball up. I think in soccer, if the ball hits it, the ref gives it to the person who just kicked it, and takes it like a normal free kick.

Yea, but it's been used in AFL and NFL.

They're different from football, the ball isn't ever in hands in football (bar goalkeepers), it flies around alot.

I'm worried about it messing up the final, honestly...if it kills a counter attack it could kill a bunch of fans and players dream, and they would be PISSED.

no way is there gonna be a cam only 7 meters above the players ...
THe ball would be bound to hit either the camera itself or the long wire it's on...

Maybe some kinda cam with a massive zoom .. I dunno.
