Ska!?

Any ska fans here? I've been listening to all 'well-known' bands and I'm getting bored, could anyone recommend some not-so famous bands? Could be ska-punk or skacore aswell.

Oh and of course, what do you think of ska? Favorite bands?

Ubik Valis

Croatian Viking
Mr. Bungle (their first, self-titled album)

Now there's a band that uses ska in a creative, original and entertaining fashion. Not the same old punk-ska crap over and over again.

OK first of all Ska started off in the 1960's in Jamaica and became more popular in Britain late 70s, early 80s. After the 80s it sort of died out and now certain groups sometimes perform concerts once ina while. How the hell you figured its a "New Genre" is beyond me Tom, and then with the Chav reference, thats jus complete bollocks, but i guess some people just think Chavs are people who don't listen to Rock or whatever you listen to.

Anyway..Andrejs what bands you into mate? Recently i've been listening to the older generation; Prince Buster, Desmond Dekker, Judge Dread etc.

Ska new music? Talk about ignorance.

Andrejs, try Fishbone, The Selector, The Specials, Rancid, The Skatalites, The Beat (aka The English Beat), [spunge], and Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra.

i love it when people get annoyed over music "genres" (H)

It's like when you call a band pop, and all their fans gather around and tell you to **** off... But what constitutes to being pop? how is Arctic Monkeys, Muse or Metallica now not pop? they're all popular in the mainstream.

Just makes me laugh.

Oh and sorry about the Ska comment, but you guys still make me laugh (H)

I find it funny when someone who clearly hasn't gota clue about a genre can label it Chavy. By the way what kind of music do you listen to?

you're saying im labelling ska as chavvy? (H)

i listen to everything, usually apart from silly r'n'b stuff like Beyonce, but even then, some still gets through.

Ska is a great genre, but, as most, was plagued by bands copycating other bands when major labels took notice. That's why all 3 waves died. I was sick of pop bands going ska because it was the flav of the week.

Sublime was probably the greatest ever. Yeah, I know, they aren't strictly a ska band, but that is exactly why they are the best.

Primitive Reason was also one of the best ska bands I've heard. I must have seen them live over 10 times. Again, they mix other sounds with ska, making it all very original - and this was before the 3rd ska wave!
Try their 'Alternative Prision' album. Despite the slightly amateurish production, it's unbelievable how great the songs are.
Shame they broke up. Bigger shame their bassist picked up the band's name to start a metal/ska/world music band.

And, of course, the Sweet Puppies. (H)

I used to be into Ska back in high school (seems like ages ago) The Specials, English Beat, etc. were my faves...basically the usual suspects I guess. There was a local ska band called the Hopping Penguins who were pretty good too. Their shows were always a beer-soaked fiesta!

Well, if we're going to talk about any loose definition of ska, as we seem to be doing...

Operation Ivy. Fantastic punk band, a lot of people call them ska although I don't really know why. Still good though.

Reel Big Fish. Definitely the most popular and probably the best of the pure ska third wave bands.

Less than Jake. Punk/ska. A lot of their earlier stuff (Losing Streak and Hello Rockview) had more horns although they're another band where some say they're ska, but I just don't see it. Just because you have a few upstrokes in your songs you're ska? Either way, they're good.

Mustard Plug. Another Third Wave band, but I think they were actually the best of the "third wave" sounding ska bands. However I did have a love hate relationship with them when I was into this music. LOVED them at the time, can't really stand much of them now.

Ah i'm beginning to think i'm into a "different" type of Ska from the majority of members on here, the bands/artists I prefer are; Bad Manners, The Specials, The English Beat, Madness, Desmond Dekker, Prince Buster, Judge Dread, The Pioneers, The Skatalites, Toots, UB40 etc.

You're into the British (Jamaican) version. To avoid confusion I've always just referred to that kind of ska as "Two Tone" or Two Tone Ska.

I'm 22 years old, I was 12-14 when the Third Wave was at its peak, that's what I'm going to think of first and foremost when I think of ska.

I've also realized that since I will inevitably buy the new Less than Jake CD even though I'm not really even into this genre of music anymore, I've officially been a hardcore fanboy for 8 years! Definitely going to be singing along in the pop-punk classic tame moshpit (sweaty people leaning on each other) on their inevitable tour this summer.

Heh, I was about to ask about them, but than I saw Dragans comment and it all got clear to me, lol. Do you still play? Any mp3´s maybe? :p

Thanks for all those recommendations, now I got some searching to do. My personal favorites have been The Specials of course, Bad Manners, Tokyo Ska Orchestra, Skaos, Bluekilla, Against All Authority (best ska punk band ever (H)), Ska-P, Skatalites and than a bunch of Latvian and Russian bands that no one knows about.

Ive been into different types of ska since I was about 12. My favourite bands are:

-Big D and the Kids Table
-Less Than Jake (even though they are now much more pop than ska)
-Ska-P (one of my favourites)
-Banda Bassotti (the italian version of Ska-P)
-Slapstick
-Catch 22 (awesome band!)

And Operation Ivy, the band if I'm not mistaken, who first started mixing ska with punk.
